Police Hunt Stabbing Suspect in Colorado

Police have released a composite sketch of a man who stabbed a woman and left her for dead. According to police the woman met the man in Denver on April 26, 2008. The woman was stabbed repeatedly by the man and left in a field near Denver International Airport. Wounded, she made her way to 56th Avenue where someone drove her to the airport to call police. The suspect is believed to be in his 20s, with a mole beneath one eye. He has thick, dark eyebrows. He is believed to still be in the Denver area.

A local advertising company in Daytona Beach, Fl is helping in the search for a serial killer. Lamar Outdoor Advertising has donated space on two electronic billboards in the area. Police are hoping the billboards will lead to break in the case of the Daytona Beach Serial Killer. The billboards feature a hotline number (1-800-277-TIPS) and the photos of the four known victims. The four women whose deaths have been connected to one unkown suspect are Laquetta Gunther, Julie Green, Iwana Patton, and Stacey Gage. if you have any information related to the deaths of these four women, please call 1-800-277-TIPS.

Jerrold Ecklind looks like the sketch, yes indeed --but the sketch is not of the serial killer!

I have been noticing a mistaken assumption on various message boards and blogs around the web. My April 20, 2008 post, The Doctor's Orders - Dr. Ecklind's Agenda was quite popular among amateur crime researchers. The post was about Dr. Jerrold Ecklind's intentions on the day he drove off with a woman and allegedly made her place handcuffs on herself. The Ormond Beach doctor was arrested last month for impersonating a police officer, among other charges. At the end of the post, I attached a press release from the Volusia County sheriff's office containing a sketch of a suspect from an unrelated sexual assault (unrelated to the serial killer, as far as we know) that occurred in New Smyrna Beach. I would like to make sure that readers understand that this is not a confirmed sketch of the serial killer. Having read the post carefully, the reader would know that this case is completely unrelated, as far as we know. Because of the misunderstanding, readers will now see various posts on blogs and message boards referring to the composite as that of the serial killer. Please, I hope this post makes clear that this is not the case, and has never been presented as such on this site.

That being said, I find the two images to be very striking in their similarity. For this reason, and the strange behavior exhibited by Ecklind, I believe the doctor should be investigated thoroughly regarding unsolved crimes in the area. It is no secret that police are looking closely at Jerrold Ecklind regarding the serial murders of four area women. We are still awaiting their conclusions in that matter.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE RELEASES COMPOSITE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT SUSPECT

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office released a composite sketch on Thursday of a man wanted for abducting a 26-year-old woman at gunpoint earlier this week and sexually assaulting her in a remote, wooded area near New Smyrna Beach. When the suspect took off after Monday’s attack, the victim walked about a half-mile before flagging down a New Smyrna Beach police officer.

The victim told Sheriff’s investigators that she was walking along U.S. 1 in Port Orange Monday afternoon when a newer model, white minivan with tinted windows drove by several times and the driver tried to convince the woman to get in the vehicle. When she refused, the victim said a white man in his late 30s got out of the van, pulled out a handgun and ordered her to get into the vehicle. Fearing for her life, the victim complied and the suspect got back into the van and drove southbound towards New Smyrna Beach. The victim said the man rolled up the windows and locked the doors to prevent her from escaping.

The suspect drove to a secluded area near New Smyrna Beach, sexually battered the victim and then left the woman in the woods while he drove off. The attack occurred off of a dirt road off of S.R. 44, west of I-95 not far from New Smyrna Beach’s municipal water treatment plant. The suspect was described as approximately 6' tall and weighing about 250 pounds, with black and gray, scruffy hair and no facial hair. The suspect has a small scar on his chin and was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes.

Jackson County Sheriff Roger Levick said today that man whose body was discovered in a ditch Saturday (May 3) was Johnny Ray Lee Jr., 60, of Altus. Cause of death is still unknown.

Authorities are still searching for the pickup truck. (See Below)

While we're waiting for DNA to exonerate Jerrold Ecklind, an Ormond Beach geriatric physician, from suspicion that he may be the Daytona Beach Serial Killer, there are still a few things to consider.

We have two people, strangers to Ecklind, that say he told them he was an officer of the law. He was no such thing.

Ecklind allegedly pointed a loaded gun at a man and told him he was "the police".

Ecklind had not one, but three, loaded guns in his car. According to his own attorney, these guns were "strategically placed" in his vehicle (one was holstered on his left hip).

Not only did Ecklind have three loaded weapons in the car, he had a pair of handcuffs!

The woman he allegedly "saved" said that when she got into Ecklind’s car, he made her handcuff herself.

He then drove around for 45 minutes telling her he was taking her to jail.

So even if Ecklind is not the serial killer, he's one strange dude that should be supervised closely.

Daytona Beach police will not comment on this case. Ecklind is cooperating with authorities according to his attorney.

OSBI Releases POI Sketch -Tammy Harjo Murder

OSBI Forensic Artist Harvey Pratt created a sketch of a person of interest using the input of several eyewitnesses. The unidentified man was seen walking up to the home of Tammy Harjo at 417 N. Bryan in Okmulgee, OK Thursday evening (May 1). Tammy Harjo, 43, was found dead 10:30 AM Friday (May 2) of blunt force trauma to her body.

If anyone recognizes the person in the sketch, or has any information regarding this crime, please, call either the OSBI hotline at 1-800-522-8017 or the Okmulgee Police Department at (918)756-3511.

Obnoxious Behavior

A 28-year-old Oxnard, CA man was leaving Loffler's Sports Bar & Grill at Regal Avenue and Mac Street with his girlfriend and three other friends. As they left at about 1:30 AM, he noticed a young man urinating in public in the presence of women. Richard (Ricardo) Zarate expressed his indignation at the man's lack of civility and hygiene, unaware that he was speaking to a homicidal maniac.

Heated words were exchanged between the two, but no reported physical confrontation occurred. Zarate and his friends then proceeded to their car, which was parked on a nearby street. The suspect was too cowardly to confront the person with an old-fashioned assault & battery. Why risk a bloody nose he could do much better from the safety of his own car? Unfortunately, the obnoxious and cowardly behavior only escalates.

Horror

The suspects vehicle veered toward the party, running Zarate over, dragging him about 75 yards. To prove that this was no accident, the car then made a U-turn on the dead end street --and ran the man over again!

The driver of the car wasn't the only heartless dirt-bag, as the woman on the passenger side grabbed the Zarate's girlfriend by the hair as they drove by. She was thrown to the ground suffering cuts and bruises. No one, save for the suspects, knew that an evening of fun would turn into a night of screams and horror. Later on in the hospital, Zarate died from his injuries.

Toby Lee Lowry & Morgan Amanda Leppert In Custody

Morgan Amanda Leppert, 15, and Toby Lee Lowry, 22, were taken into custody about 4:30 PM by police in El Paso, TX. According to police the two were found panhandling on the side of the road with a hitchhiker. The stolen truck was about 20 yards away.

Lowry is being charged with grand theft auto and interference with the custody of a child. Texas authorities may be charging the trio with panhandling.

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Jerrold Ecklind, the physician arrested last weekend for police impersonation, has submitted a DNA sample and his home was searched for a .40 caliber handgun typical of those used in the first three serial killings. Ecklind's attorney, Mike Lambert said that no gun of that type was found out of the 40 to 50 guns in Ecklind's possession. Ecklind's DNA sample, which was not drawn at the time of his arrest, is still under examination.

Ecklind was also questioned regarding the four victims of the Daytona Beach serial killer. Ecklind is being cooperative, according to police, who will not divulge any other information.

Police have also obtained a wallet once belonging to Laquetta Gunther from her friend, Stacy Dittmer. Why police are requesting the wallet at this late date, and if the wallet has anything to do with the investigation into Ecklind remains unknown. The wallet did contain several pieces of paper with phone numbers of Gunther's associates, according to Dittmer.

Lambert contends that Ecklind never stated that he was a policeman, however, the presence of the handcuffs could not be explained. According to Lambert, Ecklind has a concealed carry permit and was only trying to help a troubled citizen. I guess he has never heard of a cellphone.

Reading the Blogs

"He's been reading the blogs and he sees that people think he's the serial killer," Lambert said. "But he has nothing to hide and he's been exonerated. He let the police search his home and they found nothing. They questioned him about the women who were killed and he told them he knew nothing about the murders."

Results of a Google Blog search reveals only CrimeShadows News (and a couple of other blogs containing stolen CrimeShadows content) refer to Ecklind and the serial killer in the same posts. There are other posts at various news websites (including the News-Journal) with comments from readers who believe that Ecklind and the serial killer may be the same person.

Ecklind and the Daytona Beach serial killer are mentioned in the same posts here because I provide coverage and a website dealing with the serial killer case. Ecklind has brought himself under suspicion with his behavior, regardless of his intentions. I have never said that I thought Ecklind and the Serial Killer are the same person. I do think he should be looked at closely regarding area unsolved cases and Daytona Beach police are doing just that. Heaven knows there are plenty of other strange characters in Daytona Beach besides Jerrold Ecklind.

What we are being asked to believe is that Jerrold Ecklind, a geriatric physician:

Happened upon a man and woman arguing decided to intervene with the threat of deadly force.

That it was only coincidence that he had handcuffs in the car.

That Ecklind never told the woman that he was an undercover officer.

That Ecklind never told the man that we was "the police."

That his guns were strategically placed in the vehicle for his own self-defense.

Well, maybe a jury will buy this version of events. Maybe it is the truth, which they say is stranger than fiction. We've been asked to believe things far less likely.

Nationwide Search for Missing Child & 22 Year Old Man

A nationwide search is underway for Morgan Amanda Leppert, 15, who may be in the company of 22 year-old Toby Lee Lowry, The two may be in a silver 2003 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with Florida tag 193 KLR.

Morgan is described as a white girl about 5 foot 1 with blond hair and blue eyes. Lowry is a white man about 6 foot 2 and 190 pounds with blond hair and green eyes.

Investigators believe Leppert and Lowry may be headed to Houston, Texas. The pickup has reportedly been sighted near Katy, Texas.

Anyone with information in the case can call the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office at (386) 329-0800.

Lowry is a person of interest in the murder of 66-year-old James Thomas Stewart.

Lowry refers to himself as the "Baddest mother----er" in palatka" on his MySpace page. His user name is "morgans_man." His marital status says that he is "Engaged." I guess he plans to marry the 15 year-old girl when she grows up. He posts on his own page saying, "F--k off all ya'll bitch ass hoes I'm Taken by Morgan Amanda Lowry." Lowry's mood today is "Excited." His page is covered with drug references and vampire imagery. He must identify with vampires. Last MySpace log-in for both Lowry and Leppert April 22, 2008, the day the two went missing.

A strange message appeared on one of the pages linked to Toby Lowry's MySpace page: "R.I.P TOBY LEE LOWRY MY BIG BROTHER WHO WAS SHOT BY THE COPS." Mood: miserable. The last log-in shows yesterday (May 1), before the Amber Alert was issued. This must be a display of concern for his safety, as Lowry is, as of this writing, still on the lamb. Hopefully, this won't end in violence.

I know there are a lot of people who will say this girl is "mature" or some other bullshit to that effect. This is a child whose childhood has been stolen. Lowry may not be the only person responsible for the wayward path of this girl, but that does not make him anything less than a predator. Many of our kids are growing up too fast due to the irresponsibility of their guardians. This fact, combined with the predators that lurk after these kids, make this world a very dangerous place to grow-up in. This child is not by any means "mature." She is a victim of those who have denied her her childhood. I'm not saying this girl is an angel who shouldn't have to face any consequences, I'm just hoping that she'll find the guidance she so desperately needs. For the time being, we can all hope for her safety until this ordeal is over.

Massachusetts Serial Killer Suspect in Custody

Prosecutors in Worcester, MA have a "person of interest" in relation to the murders of several women in the area. Alex F. Scesny, 38, of Berlin, MA is being held on an unrelated charge of rape. Scesny has reportedly been linked via DNA evidence to the 1996 homicide of Theresa Stone, 39, in Fitchburg. He is currently being held without bond.

Smiley Face Killers - Fact or Fiction?

I have been pretty reluctant to blog about this story. I usually (not always) try to stay away from stories that get widespread attention. However, this is a story that is getting pretty high on the weird meter. I just thought I'd weigh in and share my own viewpoint.

I first heard about the story over at the ZodiacKiller.com Message Board. I followed the news stories just beginning to circulate, but I failed to see the connections that were being sold. As I've made plain before, I think speculation can be a good thing, provided there is a good foundation for it. There just didn't seem to be any foundation for this story.

You may have heard of the "Happy Face Killer, who signed his letters to the press with a smiley face. This is a completely different story. This is not a copycat type of thing. The "Smiley Face Killers" are, according to supporters of the theory, a gang of killers spread across multiple states that kill young college students. The killers dump the bodies into rivers, leaving a "smiley face" spray painted at the supposed site.

As a regular reader of the True Crime Weblog, I read Steve Huff's coverage of the story. He seems to share the same opinion and has outlined his reasons in his usual, eloquent manner. I also read many of the comments left by his readers, both pro and con. If you are interested in this story, I recommend you take a look over there.

Some have likened gang aspect of the so-called "Smiley Face" killings to the racially motivated Zebra killings of the 1970s. I fail to see the connection. The Zebra killings all occurred in the same general area. There was no ambiguity in the Zebra killings. Police knew they were homicides. There was no mistaking these crimes for accidental deaths. The killers were trying, very successfully, to strike fear and terror within the community. While the "Smiley Face" case brings a sense of fear and anxiety all its own, the cause of the fear may be owed to over-active imaginations.

One factor that should be considered is the ubiquity of the "smiley face." Is this not one of the most popular symbols, even on a global level? I don't think finding a smiley face in any place where graffiti is left would be that unusual. I bet if you went driving right now and examined bridges, walls, and road areas where teenagers are known to gather, you will find a smiley face. Since this story has hit the wires, you can bet you are only going to see an increase in such graffiti.

Can you think of any major body of water near you where a drowning hasn't occurred, even recently? Perhaps you can; I doubt it. Drowning is not that uncommon an accident. Couple that fact with the popularity of graffiti, and one could build their own urban legend.

Can anything good be gained by this idea of a serial killer network? Some of these deaths may get a little closer attention than they did initially. Maybe some truth will be discovered. If there is such a gang, they will definitely need to change their signature in order to be recognized. you can bet high school kids across the nation will be spray painting smiley faces to get their "lulz" for some time to come.

The Doctor's Orders - Dr. Ecklind's Agenda

Yesterday, police arrested Jerrold Ecklind, an Ormond Beach geriatric doctor, for the false imprisonment of a woman, along with impersonating an officer and aggravated assault. (Story) What were "Dr." Jerrold Ecklind's intentions when he drove off with his prey? He certainly wasn't there to play hero, or he wouldn't have had her handcuff herself. He did have three weapons, all of them loaded. He told her that he was an undercover police officer (which he was not). He was driving to some unknown destination before he was apprehended. Where was going? What was he going to do when he got there? These are haunting questions that, in all probability, have some pretty scary answers.

The probable answer, at least according to what we have seen in similar cases in the past, is that he was planning to sexually assault her. Would he have then let her go, after her having seen his face, his vehicle, and possibly taking evidence with her her? Possibly. Ecklind was counting that the man he pointed the loaded .45 at would think he was a cop and be afraid to say anything. (He bet wrong.) He might have thought that a woman who lived the high-risk lifestyle of his chosen victim would also not choose to report his crime.

On the other hand, he might not have wanted to take such a chance. He does, after all, have so very much to lose.

Of course, he may have just been playing the hero. He might have handcuffed her for his own protection. He may have feared her getting a hold on one of the loaded guns he had stashed in his car. You have to be careful who you give a ride to these days.

I do hope police keep a close eye on this guy. I also hope that he loses his medical license. He has no business in the health-care profession.

I do a lot of speculating about suspects and unsolved crimes. Some might not agree with the practice. In my view, whether or not I am right or wrong in my guesses, unsolved cases, as well as dangerous people in current society, receive attention that would otherwise be focused elsewhere. I do try to base my conjecture on fact, and not characterize people in a manner completely dissimilar to what is known.

Essentially, if a subject displays certain factors and these certain factors are present in other unsolved crimes, let's take a look and make sure this guy isn't responsible for those crimes, as well. In the end, the person(s) I suspect may not be responsible for the crime(s). Still, some things are accomplished within the true crime community. Awareness of a known criminal is raised to some extent. Unsolved crimes also receive a little more attention. Discussion, including questions and criticism, help to establish truths and weed out garbage.

I am not alone in this practice, and others take a similar amount of heat for their decisions. I am not always right in my suppositions, but I am not always wrong, either.

This doesn't mean that I endorse slander or libel against innocent persons, I do not. I also don't believe in accusing someone of a crime without any proof. That is not my intention. I am not accusing anyone of anything they haven't been officially accused of.

I have written this post to try explain why I write some of the things that I do. Some may disagree, that is fine. I don't mind criticism, but I don't wish to be misunderstood.

I've been following the case of the Daytona Beach Serial Killer for some time now. I also operate a website dedicated to providing information about the suspect and victims, in hopes that someone might know something. As I read the news today, I happened upon a story that sent an eerie chill down my spine. Not a chill of fear, but of excitement, as a potentially dangerous man has been identified.

The Daytona Beach News Journal reports today that Dr. Jerrold Ecklind, an Ormond Beach osteopathic surgeon, has been arrested for aggravated assault, false imprisonment and impersonating a police officer. It seems he interrupted an altercation between Ricky Wingate and Gina Oslizlo. Oslizlo willingly entered Ecklind's vehicle, whereupon she was handcuffed and driven around while being interrogated. Wingate was able to get the tag number of the car, and Ecklind and Oslizlo were later stopped, whereupon Ecklind was apprehended.

The reasons for my own reaction to this suspect, are the similarities that can immediately be noted:

The victims of the serial killer were prostitutes or women in high risk lifestyles. The woman found with Ecklind falls within that category.

Three of the victims were known to have been shot with a high caliber weapon (.40 caliber). Ecklind had a .45 caliber handgun in his holster.

The killing are believed by many to have been the work of a policeman, who the women would be likely to trust. Ecklind was impersonating a policeman.

The victims were believed to have been chosen at random. Ecklind appears to have chosen the woman at random.

The killer is believed to appear normal and have good verbal and social skills. Ecklind is a physician with his own practice.

Of course, this is just speculation on my part, I readily admit. This guy could just be another of the many dangerous nutjobs running around loose. Let me know what you think.

By the way, Dr. Ecklind is out on a $25,000 bond.

If he was connected to any previous crimes in the area, police would surely have taken him in by now, or at least have made some kind of announcement. If he's lucky, he may not have to cancel any appointments.

O.K., not really an update as much as a correction.
It seems there is some good news in the justice system as far as this case goes. The "no bill" on Brasher does not mean that he won't be seeing any justice at all.

In February of 2008, a Wichita County grand jury indicted Brad Neal Brasher on two counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child. As posted here earlier, grand jury also issued a no-bill on one count of aggravated sexual assault.

A search warrant issued at Brasher's home revealed his perverted activities. Brasher had installed hidden cameras and had made a recording of a child engaging in sexual conduct. Brasher told another party that he had destroyed the recording. He indicated several spots where he had placed cameras.

Several computers were confiscated during the search. A computer forensic examiner found several images of interest to police. The examiner found several JPEG files with images of juveniles engaging in sexual activity inside a bedroom. The room was recognized by police. The juveniles were both younger than 18 years of age. Brasher's wife sued for divorce in February.

On September 4, 2002, at approximately 7:55 PM, the Great Bend Police Department responded to a call at Dolly Madison Bakery, 1004 Harrison, Great Bend, KS. Upon arrival, officers found two deceased females, victims of an apparent double homicide. Police have never said how the women died. A delivery truck driver who found the bodies said they were located in a back office. A witness described seeing a white male, approximately 6'1"-6'2", weighing 175 lbs, having collar length light brown to blond hair, and a slight beard, walking away from the front door of the bakery. The murder weapon was never found, and no suspects have been arrested. Officials also aren't sure of a motive for the murders, although some money from the store was missing that night.

Everyone hates a snitch. That is what we hear all the time -in the media, in the music, in the movies. But what is a snitch? What is this code all about? Who does it serve? This post will examine the term and how it applies.

On TV, we have our lovable snitches, the fictional comic relief and plot-helpers of TV's crime dramas. The most famous was surely "Huggy Bear," portrayed by veteran blaxploitation film actor Antonio Fargas. Huggy Bear graced the screen on Starsky & Hutch with his jive-talking and flashy-threaded persona. "Hunter" had Garrett Morris as "Sporty James" to fill the comic-relief role of informant.

In real life, being an informant is a serious matter. Consider the case of Angela Dawson. She was killed for doing the right thing. She was not killed for snitching. She was killed because she was a witness to criminal activity.

In an ironic form of hypocrisy, certain sites have taken to "ratting out" the rats. One such site, Whosarat.com was founded by a man charged with dealing drugs. The site is a place where the names of informants are listed for searching by interested parties. In true snitch fashion, this information is not given for free, but for a price.

Snitching and witnessing are two different terms. An article at PopMatters.com written by Marc Lamont Hill explains the difference. He writes "While a witness is an asset to truth and justice, the snitch is motivated primarily or entirely by self-interest. While witnesses are committed to upholding social contracts, snitches inevitably undermine them. Given this distinction, it seems that the bulk of the public outcry in favor of snitching is actually a plea for witnesses." A snitch acts in his own interests. A snitch talks to get a lighter sentence or to grab a reward. If you provide information to authorities in the name of justice you are not doing so for yourself. You are not a snitch. Sometimes you are taking a big risk. Remember, you can remain anonymous in this day and age. There are hotlines and tiplines where you can give information about suspects without revealing your identity.

Here is my take on snitching and/or witnessing:

If you know of a crime, especially one in which harm has been or will be caused to a person or persons, and you do not act, you are a coward. You are not honoring something noble. You are not bettering your community. You are failing your neighbors, your family, and yourself. If you refuse to talk about someone's murder or other violent attack, you are not being straight. You are being a tool.

You may argue that the police cannot protect you or your family if you decide to talk. It may be hard to swallow, but that is cowardice. Soldiers fight for our freedom. We ask so much of them, but what do we ask of ourselves here at home? We live in a world where freedoms and protections are often taken for granted. We forget that it isn't just our men and women in uniform who have a responsibility. As Americans, we all must do our part for the country, for the society, in which we live. People do what they can to get out of civic duty. People cheat on their taxes. They weasel out of jury duty. They don't testify in sex cases because they don't want to sully their own reputation. Who wants to be associated with terms like "child molester" or "rapist?" Nobody --but think of the victims --think of justice. So people who know about these types of crimes, or can testify against an alibi or the like, avoid doing their part in helping to achieve justice. Being an American, being a good citizen requires more than just lip service. We cannot be afraid of these people. Someday it may be us who needs someone to stand up and speak. Let us hope they will have the courage. Let us provide the example by standing up for justice when and where we can. Do not be afraid.

Ohio John Doe Revealed - Joseph Newton Chandler

James Renner of the Cleveland Free Times contacted me a little over a week ago with a few questions --and told me some fascinating news! Renner was working on a story about Joseph Newton Chandler, or, as we refer to him over here, Ohio John Doe. Renner has found some fascinating information about our mystery man that I'm sure most of you have never heard before.

Joseph Newton Chandler III was the identity this John Doe had stolen from a young boy that was killed in an auto accident near Sherman, TX. John Doe most likely copied the information from the boy's tombstone in the City Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford, Texas. John Doe, using the assumed name, was found dead in his apartment on July 30 of 2002. When authorities tried to locate his next of kin, it soon became clear the man was an impostor.

James Renner has done an amazing job of gathering information on John Doe/Joe Chandler. He has also revealed more details about the man I suspected of assuming Chandler's identity, Stephen Craig Campbell. Campbell is wanted by the ATF for attempted first degree murder and possession and manufacture of a destructive device. A Federal Warrant was issued on April 25, 1983, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, charging him with manufacture and possession of a bomb.

Eugene Bennett - A Twisted Triangle

In September of 2006, I wrote a post entitled "The Strange Case of Eugene Bennett." I told readers about this strange former F.B.I. agent and his hatred for homosexuals. I wrote about how he abducted and attacked his own wife (also an F.B.I. agent) and a pastor of a church, including his unwitting involvement of a young investigator. Bennett's story reeked of weirdness from all angles. In my own mind, I wondered if Bennett might have been involved in things even more sinister, but as yet, unrevealed. This is a man I want very much to learn more about. I, and others interested will soon get the chance.

In May of 2008, author Caitlin Rother's new book, "TWISTED TRIANGLE: A Famous Crime Writer, a Lesbian Love Affair, and the FBI Husband’s Violent Revenge" will hit the shelves. I first heard of Caitlin Rother when she left some contact information on CrimeShadows News while researching this very book. I have been waiting in anticipation ever since.

Caitlin Rother, a former investigative reporter for The San Diego Union-Tribune and Pulitzer Award nominee, has written the first complete account of the events that led up to that momentous night in 1996. The book covers the affair between Bennett's wife Margo and crime author Patricia Cornwell. Margo and Eugene's troubled careers with the F.B.I. and the abduction and attempted murder are detailed in the book, as well.

Margo Bennett currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she is a captain in the University of California, Berkeley campus police department. Eugene (Gene) Bennett is incarcerated in Virginia, not far from the Washington DC area, where most of the events of this incredible story took place.

Eugene Bennett is scheduled for release in July of 2017.

Hope Against All Odds

I received the following forwarded email a while back. Like many emails that get forwarded along, it contained a tragic story with a glint of hope. I looked into the story, that of a young child gone missing, only to find that there was more to the tale than what was told in the email. In fact, the story has become what many consider an urban legend. But wait, this is no hoax. This is no trick played upon those who care about such things, those that many feel to be naive and foolish. This story has one thing that many sad stories often lack. This story has hope. Hope is expensive. It takes a lot from a person to have hope, especially when so many see that hope as fleeting or even desperate.

I titled this post "Hope against All Odds." The odds say Jewel was swept away with the currents after falling from a raft she was floating on with her aunt, who rescuers were able to save. It seems the two were carried out of the so-called "kiddie pool," an apparently calm-water alcove formed by a rock jetty at the entrance of St. Andrew Bay. The area of the jetty was searched with divers, boats and helicopters with no results. Authorities have presumed the child deceased, a victim of the turbulent waters.

But wait! Where does the "hope" come in? How can anyone have hope after learning of such devastation such a reasonable explanation and conclusion? We must remember that miracles have happened in the strangest of places. Sometimes serendipity plays a part in such things. Sometimes an opportunist sees a chance to gain from another's confusion. Herein lies the hope.

According to Snopes.com:

"The parents received their first solid piece of evidence when a customer at the Golden Corral on San Jose Boulevard thought she spotted the girl with three black women. The restaurant's surveillance video showed what the mother said are Jewel's unique mannerisms.

"(My) son has seen it, mother, sisters, aunts — everybody in our family has seen it. Everyone is completely convinced that it's her," Jewel's mother, Simona Strong, said. "We watched her walking around, dancing, bumping into people. We know our daughter."

The family expressed similar optimism about reports from Orlando, Florida, in August and September of 2007:
[T]he Strongs believe their daughter may be in Orlando. Over the past two months they received reports of Jewel sightings at Disney World and at an Orlando hospital. The latest clue that gives the family hope is an Aug. 22 video recorded by a security camera at an Orlando Walgreens store."

I guess in a world where I see many give up their children when they're close enough to touch, or give up on them when the waters get rough, it's encouraging to see a family believe in something so strongly. I hope that you will share in in their optimism, fleeting as it may be to us skeptics.

Sometimes hope itself is the miracle.

Crime Blogger's Blues

I have been doing this "true crime" blogging thing for a few years. Each month has been a lesson in human nature and the justice system. I have also learned a lot about myself along the way. I started out doing what I do because I felt a need to provide a voice for those who aren't able to speak for themselves. Sometimes I do it for those who can speak, but the people that should be listening are turning a deaf ear. My voice isn't really all that loud, but I believe it's better than less or nothing. I have always had a "complex" about being silenced myself, so I can be rather aggressive and defensive if I feel the pressure of someone trying to shut me up. I'm not always the "nice guy" a lot of folks take me for. Sometimes I think my hair-trigger responses have left me looking rather foolish in the wake of my overkill. I do, however, try to make amends for my mistakes. After all, I'm not the [what's a nice word for asshole?] that some people take me for, either. At least that's what I like to think.

Occasionally, I hear from victim's family members that have been affected by the crimes I write about. I listen and try my very best to put myself in their shoes --even though I will never feel the exact same pain that they are feeling. Hearing from these folks is what means the most to me. It's what keeps me going. While my concentration is a plea for justice to the actual victims, I feel a certain responsibility to make sure those left behind are also shown the respect they deserve, even if I don't always see things from the same perspective that they do. I realize that reading about the tragic events of one's family can extremely painful. I do not want to cause anyone any pain, above all those who have been through so much already. On the same note, I don't believe it's in anyone's best interest, save the perpetrator's, to keep silent about the crime. Sweeping it under a rug, or tucking everything away in a basement file cabinet may save someone some tears and the pain of a heart-ache. However, there are those who have lost much more than tears because of crime. There are those who lost their lives. There are those who died brutal deaths, often in the prime of their lives. These people deserve justice. They deserve to be remembered. They deserve to be avenged.

I titled this post "Crime Blogger's Blues," but I really love what I do. It's just there are times when the frustration of some injustice sets in and I let my emotions drive my actions and words that I feel the need to just "back-off" and let this crazy world spin on its own axis. I know I can't change a damn thing that's wrong with this world. I know my words are just words and my opinions mean little in the larger picture. Still, I find myself at times being so angry that I write more with the anger and disappointment than with what some would call "professional journalism," This is the dilemma that haunts many of us bloggers --and (though they may hate to admit it) many professional journalists. Not all bloggers, and not all journalists, but many, not few write more from their heart than their mind --not that it is always a bad thing.

In the past, I have condemned those charged with crimes against our children with what some interpret as "fire and brimstone." I don't go to to church and I'm no Bible thumping religious-right holy roller, or what have you. In fact, I consider myself semi-agnostic. It's just that the contemptible evilness of these crimes and the powerlessness of the victims outrages me. It outrages me that many other folks don't really seem to care --as long as it's not their child, their family. Yes, I admit, it makes me sick. It makes me angry. It makes me forget... These people, despite the news stories, despite the horrible allegations, are innocent until proven guilty. Sometimes that is immensely hard to believe, especially when a newspaper or anchor person describes the man's confession in alleged verbal detail. It's hard to believe a person is innocent when similar charges have appeared and keep appearing on that person's record, or when you hear or read words obviously from the person himself proclaiming his deviant beliefs and intents.

Sometimes events motivate me to edit or even pull a post from this site. I go through a process before performing any such action.

I ask myself a few questions:

Q: Am I considering such action for ethical reasons? Is my conscience bothering me?

If the answer is "Yes," then this is in favor of the action. I do not want to further malign a person who may be, despite all accusations to the contrary, an innocent man. However, I retain the right to republish, reinstate, and reiterate in the event that the person's guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Q: Am I doing this in fear of reprisal --from the suspect, his family, or his supporters?

If the answer is "Yes," then I must stand my ground and not make changes out of fear.

Q: Are the words that appear in the post truthful and is my opinion plainly distinguishable from the actual facts?

If the answer is "Yes," then I must stand my ground and not make changes where they are not really necessary.

Q: Am I considering this because of the threat of legal action?

If the answer is "Yes," then I must determine if I am truly within my rights and willing to stand my ground in a court of law.

I often write about the shared disappointment in the justice system and in law enforcement, in general. This may lead some in those professions to think I am against them --that I think I can do better than them. This is far from the truth.

I believe the American justice system, despite any inherent flaws, is the best justice system in the world. I believe the same of American law enforcement. It is American law enforcement that is ultimately responsible for the apprehension and prosecution of the suspects written about here. It is the justice system that has the power to deliver justice. My role is to simply keep the word out and make sure that these crimes are not forgotten. I'm not perfect, and I'm certainly not the best, but I'm still here and I'll keep on writing as long as I am able.

For those who will not be silenced.

Update: Brad Neal Brasher has been "no-billed" by a Wichita County grand jury. He will not have to answer to the charges against him. He was originally charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child.

The same Wichita County grand jury indicted Brad Neal Brasher on two counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child.

The same grand jury also "no-billed" forty other persons, including a man charged with sexual assault of a child, another man charged with injury to a child, four persons charged with aggravated assault, and a man charged with manslaughter. None of these persons will be tried for their alleged offenses.

Daytona Killer At Large & Possibly Poised to Strike Again

As Daytona Beach, FL is in full throttle in the middle of Bike Week, a serial killer still evades justice. Frustrated police believe it is just a matter of time before he kills again. The killer targets the derelict women who live and work Daytona's perilous Ridgewood corridor, the afflicted encumbrance of the otherwise seemingly glamorous seaside retreat. The perpetrator of these crimes not only takes the forsaken lives from these women, but it appears to investigators that the killer ensures their final moments are bristling with an intense horror. The lifestyles these women live put them in certain danger, no doubt, but that in no way justifies their murder. I, for one, am glad to see the diligent efforts of the local law enforcement agencies in pursuing this killer.

There is a fervent debate concerning the industrious tactics police are using in their quest to apprehend for the serial killer. Volusia County Beach Patrol and Daytona Beach Police officers have been swabbing the mouths of suspects arrested on sex related offenses to obtain DNA for comparison against evidence obtained at the crime scenes. Contrary to some initial reports, DNA is not taken against the wishes of the person. Samples are only collected if the person volunteers to submit it to authorities in writing. The law in Florida allows for DNA to be collected after a felony arrest. Under the law, suspects may be asked to surrender a DNA sample voluntarily, even on a misdemeanor offense.

All samples are sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's laboratory for processing. Once a sample is processed and compared to the serial killer's DNA, the sample is discarded, unless, of course, there is a match. However, if a person is convicted of specific crimes which allows for the DNA to be collected, the sample is kept in the state database.

DNA is normally collected by swabbing inside the cheeks of the persons. DNA samples have been collected from various suspects, including DUI offenders, some caught masturbating in public lavatories.

Opponents to the DNA collection say it is an invasion of privacy. In my opinion, illegal activity should not be a private matter. If a person doesn't want their DNA collected, maybe they shouldn't be seeking illicit sex. After all, they have no problem submitting their DNA to the prostitutes themselves. Nor do they seem to have a problem with the risk of acquiring STDs, or even HIV. In my opinion, the "privacy" whining is usually just a plea for a twisted double standard. That is not to say there could be some real issues addressed in the collection of DNA and how it is used. Overall, I believe the collection of DNA to be a good thing. The victims of this killer are real. They were women, they were human. Their killer deserves justice. When you balance the possibility that a killer may be caught against the chance that a criminal may be exposed for what he really is, I think the choice is rather obvious to a reasonable concerned citizen.

A bill sponsored by Senator Evelyn Lynn, R-Ormond Beach, calls for DNA testing on all persons arrested for various violent and sexual offenses, including juveniles. The law would also extend to suspects already locked up, those found mentally incompetent to stand trial, and convicts still under court supervision. Two other bills sponsored by other state lawmakers target juveniles and adults convicted of a felony, certain misdemeanors, and offenses that courts find benefit criminal street gangs. ACLU Florida legal counsel Larry Spalding deems the proposed legislation to be "absolutely outrageous." What a surprise!

On a hot summer day in Richmond, VA, Detective Shane Wait is called to a local apartment complex where a murder victim has been bound and stuffed in the trunk of the car. With no witnesses and no original crime scene, the detective has to heavily rely on the forensic evidence gathered from the victim's body and the car. Waite has forensic tech Detective Faith Flippo test the vehicle for blood, DNA, and anything else that might help identify the killer. A break in the case occurs when Waite gets a 911 tip from a witness who said he that heard two gunshots the night of the murder at his apartment complex and saw two men entering the building. (March 13, 2008) Crime 360. Fatal Feud. Two men who live next to each other in a housing project get into a deadly argument. One is shot and killed. Detectives Crewell and Williams take the two men's girlfriends back to headquarters to find out what happened. One story tells of murder, the other self-defense. Detectives try to unravel the different accounts given by the girlfriends. The key may lie with a gun that was recovered from a trash can behind the house. A Federal lab tests a bullet found at the scene and the gun to determine if it is the murder weapon. Meanwhile, Crewell and Williams try to find holes in the girlfriend's stories. As the girlfriend's stories start to fall apart, the suspect on the run is feeling the heat. CC HD [TV14]

(March 20, 2008) Crime 360. Deadly Secrets. In Cleveland, Ohio, lead Homicide Detective Wally Everett and his partner Detective Mike Smith, are called out to a crime scene where a body lays hidden between some hedges and the porch of the victim's grandmother's house. The victim, a male, is face down. Strewn around the front lawn are seven bullet casings, evidence suggesting that the victim was shot multiple times. As detectives investigate the immediate area, they discover clues of the victim's alternate lifestyle--and they wonder if there may be a connection between that and his murder. Each piece of evidence takes them closer to their suspect and his motive. CC HD [TV14]

(March 27, 2008) Crime 360. Blood on the Tracks. In Cleveland, Detectives Tim Entenok and Joselito Sandoval are called to a crime scene where a missing person is found dead in a 4-foot-diameter sewage drain, in a remote section of a park. The body is found 300 feet deep in the pipe, which has been draining a constant flow of rainwater. When Entenok takes a closer look at the body, he notices that it is maggot-infested: an indication that the body has been in the pipe for over a week. The victim's head seems to have bullet holes, but the detectives can't be certain. Only an autopsy will determine the cause of death. Meanwhile Sandoval scours the nearby train tracks for additional evidence. A few rocks, stained with a blood-like substance, are collected. The investigation seems to go cold with no leads until a female witness gives them a much-needed break in the case. CC HD [TV14]

Killer Crew: A Grisly Death-Bed Confession

This post is to let my readers know about the must-read story by Ben Mongtomery of The St. Petersburg Times.

It was October 22, 2007 and I was on the phone with Private Investigator and C.E.O. of ReunitePeople.com, Lynn-Marie Carty. She was telling me the whole story about some crimes whose perpetrators are now coming into the forefront. Let me tell you, her words were chilling.

Lynn-Marie Carty related her shocking account of a handicapped man's unnerving deathbed confession. I couldn't believe my ears. This couldn't be the truth. It had to be some sort of morbid screenplay or pulp fiction novel. The horrible reality is that it was, in fact, a true story. I thought she was going to run out of breath.

You see, this wasn't some rumor Lynn-Marie just heard or read about. She is part of the story. She is a major force in the investigation of the Connecticut River Valley murders. Carty believes that Michael Nicholau is responsible for many of the areas unsolved crimes. She ought to know. She first heard of Nicholaou when Michelle Ashley's family had hired Carty, a female private investigator, to find their missing daughter. Ashley was Nicholaou's first wife. Nicholaou would later take his own life after killing his current wife and stepdaughter.

But, the most shocking thing about the murders in the Connecticut River Valley area is that they may have been perpetrated by not just one man, but a sinister crew of murderers. According to witness accounts of Westover's alleged confession, These men would take a paraplegic, Gary Westover, along for a thrill-killing ride in a vehicle used to transport disabled vets. At times, according to a witness's account of his confession, these men would allegedly put a knife in Westover's hands so that he would be more than just a witness to their heinous acts. There is a strong possibility that one of these men may have been Michael Nicholaou, who is already a known killer and a suspect in many other brutal deaths, including the Connecticut River Valley serial murders. After taking in all of the info Lynn-Marie Carty has so graciously shared with me, I'm inclined to agree. Are the other two men involved in these crimes still alive and running free? You will definitely be hearing more about Gary Westover, Michael Nicholaou, and this incredible story in the weeks to come.

Daytona Beach: The Hunt for the Killer

Police in Daytona Beach, FL have linked four unsolved homicides that occurred between December 2005 and December 2007 to a single killer. The murders of LaQuetta Gunther, Julie Green, Iwana Patton, and Stacey Gage are believed to have been committed by the same man.

I have created a website dedicated to providing information on the case and encouraging anyone with knowledge about the crimes to come forward.

Visitors can find information regarding the crimes on the site, including victims and possible suspects. Also presented are various developed theories and profiles of the offender.

Bad Brad Brasher - A Big "Thumbs Down"

Brad Neal Brasher, 36, of Wichita Falls, Texas, was charged this week with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child. The assaults occurred between July 6, 2003 and July 17, 2004. Brasher had also placed a live camera in the little girl's room. Brasher’s bond was set at $750,000, He is being held in the Wichita County Jail. The reasons for the lapse in time from the actual events to Brasher's arrest may be owed to the power that predators of this type have over their prey.

I did a little digging and learned a little more about Brad Neal Brasher, or BadBrad, as he likes to be called.

Brad Brasher likes movies. He seems to really enjoy movies that deal with ending another's innocence. Granted, some of the movies on his list may not seem to be the fare of pedophiles, and many enjoy a wide audience of quite normal viewers, but Brad's comments seem to unveil his darker, deviant side.

About "Pretty Baby," a film about a pre-teen prostitute, BadBrad says "this film is none the less a drawn out warning to pedophiles about the emotional bedrock that they hit trying to get romantic with children, even the willing." Notice that the title role, the Brooke Shields character, is a 12-year-old girl. This is the same age as Brasher's alleged victim. BadBrad's review is entitled "Clear Warning" and is dated November 28, 2003, within the alleged time frame of his attacks. BadBrad ends his review of "Pretty Baby" with these words: "This video can be found in the Wal-Mart DVD bins for $5.88. Now how is that for making naked kids too easily available. What a wonderful world..." Tell me that if isn't a perverted thing to say!

Guess what! The above review was not Brasher's first comment session of this movie. Only two months prior, Brasher had left another review of "Pretty Baby" on August 26, of 2003, again within the alleged time frame. Why does this movie interest BadBrad so? Perhaps his own words express his reasons best of all: "What is on-screen here is really very clearly a form of vicarious catharsis for would be pedophiles / ephebophiles." I have to admit, I didn't know what an "ephebophile" was until writing this post.

BadBrad's review of "Foxes" was also focused on the sexuality of the movie. Brasher's words in this review are chilling knowing what he is accused of. The words in this review that make you want to cause him bodily harm have to be these: "I remember when being a teen was called 'The tender age'."

Some of the movies that Brasher chose to review may seem innocuous enough, at least at first glance. I'm sure that many people have watched these movies without thinking about the subtle deviance that Brasher seems to focus on. Take, for instance, "The Professional." From Brasher's comments, it is obvious his focus is on the darker, less approached areas of the film. To Brasher, the father/daughter type relationship that is formed between the protagonist and the young girl that becomes entangled in his life is overshadowed by the little hints at a more intimate relationship. This type of relationship never occurs in the movie, but you wouldn't know that by reading Brasher's remarks. Brasher, from his own words, seems to think that a man lusting for a child is a natural. He says as much: "And Leon's struggle to resist her is credible because you can see it, where most films would whitewash this complex everpresent (sic) fact-of-life. So, Where was the abuse occurring?"

Of course, it is up to the courts to decide if Brasher is guilty or innocent of the crimes with which he is charged. That does not mean that his words do not evoke the depravity that may be lurking within him.

Update: Brad Neal Brasher has been "no-billed" by a Wichita County grand jury. He will not have to answer to the charges against him.

The same grand jury also "no-billed" forty other persons, including a man charged with sexual assault of a child, another man charged with injury to a child, four persons charged with aggravated assault, and a man charged with manslaughter. None of these persons will be tried for their alleged offenses.

Unsolved Homicide - Amanda Yevette DeVaul

Here is a case that was added to the site this last year. This case really needs the attention of the public. Someone out there can help. Please, remember Amanda, and help her killer receive the justice that he has so far escaped. If you know anything at all that may be of value to investigators, step up and let your voice be heard.

On November 26, 2006, Amanda Yevette DeVaul was shot to death at her home in Vicksburg, Mississippi, just two days after her twentieth birthday. No one has been arrested and there is little information available on this case. As of this writing there are no "official" suspects.

According to the Vicksburg Post, authorities arrived to find Amanda's body after responding to a medical call. The Warren county coroner ruled the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the chest. The case was ruled a homicide.

“No consistencies for suicide were apparent in her autopsy. We’re sure this is a homicide we’re investigating,” said Jeff Merrit, an investigator with Vicksburg Police.

Amanda's sister, who was at there when police arrived, said “We don't know any more than what the police told us, But I know they didn't have to shoot her. She was just well-loved.”

At first police did not say whether they believed Amanda had been the victim of foul play. Hours later police released a limited amount of information on the case.

Police said that they had interviewed Amanda's boyfriend, who lived at the residence with her. He said that he returned from the store to find his girlfriend on the front steps of their apartment. he then called 911. Police said that the boyfriend and several other persons had gone to the store at Cherry and Clay (nine blocks away.) When they returned they found Amanda deceased.

The boyfriend's hands were tested for gunshot residue, but police declined to say whether he was a suspect. Other forensic tests were performed. CrimeShadows.com has not learned of the outcome of any of these tests.

A gun was recovered but it is unknown if it was the weapon used in the murder.

Amanda DeVaul was born November 24, 1986, in Natchez, Mississippi. Amanda had lived at 807 Second North Street since February of 2006.

Unsolved Homicide - Brett Wolfe

I have been adding unsolved cases from 2007 to the blog, just give them an extra "bump" into the public view. The following case comes from 2006, but I'm adding it here, because, like so many unsolved homicides, it needs more attention.

On September 22, 2006 the body of Brett Wolfe was found lying face down on the floor of his Seminole, Oklahoma apartment. His hands and feet had been bound. Wolfe had been shot to death. He was discovered by his roommate that morning and police believe he had been killed only hours prior to his discovery.

There are no suspects in this case. Wolfe never saw his newborn child. His son was born a few days before Wolfe was killed. Please help solve this case.

Unsolved Homicides - Jack & Elaine Denney

On Christmas of 2007, the bodies of Jack & Elaine Denney were found in their home near the border of Cherokee and Mayes counties south of Locust Grove, Oklahoma. Sometime between December 23, when they were last seen alive, and December 25, when they were discovered by their daughter, the couple had been shot to death. The victims had been shot in the head and torso.

There had been a wave of burglaries around the time of their deaths, yet investigators could find no signs of a forced entry or struggle.

Jack Denney, 65, had retired in December after 27 years as a superintendent of mechanical maintenance at the Grand River Dam Authority. Elaine Denney, 66, was a life-long homemaker who enjoyed making quilts for friends and family. The Denney's were parents and grandparents known for their generosity and enthusiasm.

This tragic case needs your attention. If you know anything, please contact the authorities at the number(s) below. The person or persons responsible for this heinous act deserve justice. I hope that it comes soon.

Unsolved Homicide - Denise Stice

The body of Denise F. Stice was discovered at approximately 9:30 a.m. on November 27, 2007. Her body was found by a church group at a park on the south side of Lake Overholser, west of the dam, a few feet from the water. The body appeared to have been deposited there to conceal evidence associated with her homicide. The state medical examiner said that Stice, 48, died of a gunshot wound to the head. There are no suspects in this slaying. Stice's vehicle was found a short time after her body was found.

Denise Stice's husband reported his wife missing when she did not show up to work at Tinker's Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center. Mrs. Stice worked there as director of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization. Stice had worked at Tinker Air Force Base since 1999.

Unsolved Homicide - Pamela Sue Purser

Pamela Sue Purser, 53, was found murdered inside her home in the 5200 block of Meridian Lane Road just after 5:00 PM in Lone Grove, OK on June 17, 2007 (Sunday). Her body was discovered by her son. She had been stabbed to death.

No forced entry was detected. Robbery was not an apparent motive. Nothing in the home appeared to have been out of place. Ms. Purser’s 2-year-old grandchild was inside the home and fortunately was not harmed. Purser had custody of the child. Agents obtained evidence from the crime scene and have interviewed several persons. There are no solid suspects in this case.

Ms. Purser formerly served as Office Secretary for International Union of Operating Engineers Local 670 in Ardmore, OK.

Have a Safe 2008!

You are not safe. I'm not kidding around. I'm not being sensational. I am telling you the truth. You are not safe.

By now you're probably thinking ol' Chris has lost his last cat's eye marble. All of these tragic situations I've been examining have finally drove me out of what is left of my mind. Before you call the men in the white coats, let me explain.

I want you to be safe. However, I don't want you to have a false sense of security. I don't want you to think you are invincible. I want you to realize that bad things do happen and they can happen to you. They will happen to you... if you aren't careful.

People, both male and female, disappear everyday. People, especially females disappear from places they think are safe. Many of these people have been found dead. People tell themselves they are safe. They believe their own words. They forget. They are not safe.

People tell themselves that their children are safe. They tell themselves their children are in safe places. They tell themselves that nothing can hurt their children. They believe these words. They forget. Their children are not safe.

A woman gets a call from her ex. He wants to talk. He doesn't want any meddlesome family members in the way. "Let's meet in the park. Come alone." He wouldn't hurt her. Not now. He knows what would happen if he did. Besides, she'll have her cellphone. She'll be in her own car. Is it safe?

The youth pastor is a nice man. He really likes kids. He even bought a nice gift for their little girl. Why can't more young men be like him? His daughter is best friends with their own girl. She has been invited for a sleep-over. Other kids will be there. Everyone can pick up their kids at Sunday School the next morning. Is it safe?

A young lady finishes her shopping at Wal-Mart. As she loads her groceries into her car, one of the sacks breaks open. A man nearby picks up the cans which have rolled his way. He brings them to her. He didn't cause the sack to break. He's just being helpful. Is it safe?

O.K. --That's all of the melodrama. Let's get down to business. The purpose of this thread was not to frighten or cause a stir. These are just a few words of many that might be read by one person in a day. It appears I have your attention. All I ask is that you take the time to measure the risks that you are taking. Look at the vulnerabilities that you may not be aware of. I have seen so many horrible news stories in 2007. Tragic events that did not have to happen. I want 2008 to be better. I don't want to see families suffer the horrible loss of their loved ones. I don't want to see people die at the hands of some predator who could have been stopped.

I am by no means encouraging people to take up arms. Weapons alone can only put you in more danger. If you plan to arm yourself, do not leave out proper training. Otherwise, you will only be providing a potential predator with a readily available weapon.

I am not telling you to stay cooped up in your homes with the shades drawn and the blankets over your head. Live your life. Do the things you love to do. Just be sure to use caution and preparation. Catch & Release Program Isn't Working

Police in Oklahoma City are on the lookout for Gary Allen Sellman, 47, of Chickasha, a homeless man connected by both witness and DNA evidence to the sexual assault of a woman walking along the Oklahoma River. Sellman jumped out of the woods where he was lurking and raped the woman and then robbed her. The attack occurred over two months ago.

Gary Sellman would have been quite easy to find if they had left him where he belonged. In fact, they wouldn't have had to hunt him down for the attack, because his victim would have been safe from him had he been left where he was --behind bars!

It just so happens that Sellman was convicted in November of 1993 of lewd molestation. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which he began to serve on December 1, 1993. Let's see... December 1, 1993... plus 15 years... that comes to December of 2008! If he had was made to serve the original sentence he was given, that woman would not have been assaulted by Sellman. Instead, Sellman walked on January 27 of 2000 after only serving less than half of his original sentence.

But wait folks --that ain't all! In March of 2005 he was sentenced to another 5 years for failing to register as a sex offender. So, if he had been made to serve even that time, regardless of the first charge, he would still be in jail. Again, after only serving less than half of his sentence, Sellman was again a predator on the prowl. He remains free, now wanted for rape, as of this writing.

So here we have two chances for the state to have to have done the right thing and protect its citizen's from people like Gary Sellman. Two chances blown to Hell. Time will tell what happens next with this walking pile of human waste. Hopefully, he'll get hit by a train.

Robert Reid: Another Killer May Go Free

On October 17, 1983, Robert Gerald Reid stabbed his fleeing wife to death on his neighbors front lawn. When being questioned by police, Reid admitted to fatally stabbing his wife, Daisey, in the chest. When a police captain entered the room to inform the interviewing detective that Reid's wife had succumbed to her wounds and was now dead, Robert Reid's cold-hearted response was simply "Good!"

Robert Gerald Reid was later sentenced to life in prison. Now it turns out he may not have to serve that time.

Twenty-four years have passed. Does anyone remember Daisey Reid? Should the man that killed her be allowed to walk free, even though he was sentenced to life for his heinous crime?

It seems that during his incarceration Reid has not stabbed a single woman to death. He has even convinced Oklahoma's state parole board that he should be able to walk a free man. They have recommended his parole even though less brutal murderers have been given the death penalty. If Governor Brad Henry signs Reid's release, I feel for the next woman that becomes entangled in his violent wrath.

Governor Henry, please remember Daisey Reid. Please don't let her life be sold for so less. Please let Robert Reid serve his entire sentence. Another woman's life may depend on it.

If There is a Hell...

The trial of Michael Anthony Benham (seen in the photo to the left), of Wister, OK, appears to have been set for January 22, 2008, according to Oklahoma District Court records. In case your not familiar with Anthony Benham, he is the 38-year-old man accused of raping his own daughter from the time she was only seven years old.

If the accusations are true, the evil in this man is indeed shocking and reprehensible. According to the Poteau Daily News, Benham actually speaks as if his own daughter encouraged her abuse. According to the story, Benham began victimizing this child at an early age, and continued his alleged attacks until the girl was 14 years old. The child reported Benham's attacks to authorities and he was initially bound over for trial in September of 2006.

Benham allegedly had the brazenness to say that the child was "coming onto me pretty good. She knew what she was doing and I was surprised." How could these words be uttered? I think it shows what kind of evil may lurk in his mind. Anthony Benham may have walked this earth hiding a secret. The man he pretended to be may finally be exposed as the monster he really is.

If Michael Anthony Benham is convicted he will be eligible for the death sentence. If he is guilty, I hope he gets it. Other sentencing options are imprisonment in the State Penitentiary for a term of not less than five years, life or life without parole.

I will try to keep readers updated as to what happens to Anthony Benham. Hopefully, he will receive the death penalty if he is found guilty. If he is the predator he is accused of being, may he never walk a free man.

On July 4, 1969 Darlene Ferrin was shot to death by the Zodiac Killer in Vallejo, California. Her friend, Mike Mageau, was wounded. There was no apparent motive for the attack. The man responsible would make phone calls and letters claiming responsibility.

The Zodiac case, and that fateful July 4, would become infamous. Books were written and movies were made. The world was captivated by the motiveless killing. On that same night --within the same hour, another woman was killed without motive. Her husband and child were injured. This happened 300 miles away in Fresno. There were no books written. there were no movies made. But, as with the Zodiac, the killer was never captured.

Reading Texas DA Won't Prosecute Any Pedophiles Nabbed in NBC 'Predator' Show, makes one wonder who the law enforcement in this community is protecting and serving. Shows like Dateline NBC put the manpower and funds out there to actively catch pedophiles while letting them know that the hunters are being hunted. If law enforcement can compete with Dateline NBC, then by all means let them. The fact is, they cannot match the effort. Many police forces lack the personnel and the money to actively pursue these perverts as aggressively as shows like Dateline NBC can. These shows make their money because people love to see justice. In this day and age, where computers and access to information are not limited to the "experts," law enforcement needs to learn to work with private operations.

The area law enforcement must have been embarrassed when one of their own ended up chasing after what he thought was a little girl. None of this would have happened if Dateline had just left things to law enforcement(What would have happened? Anything?. As Chris Hansen from "Dateline NBC: To Catch a Predator" stated, "I don't want to get involved in the DA's business or the police business," he said. "I can tell you in the other locations, these issues did not come up." Obviously, the powers that be in the Murphy area are willing to let the child molesters go free just so they can chicken scratch a line in the sand. That is what I call Perverted Justice. With so many sexual predators running rampant and preying on our children, we cannot afford to play politics. We must learn to work together.

"Dave" sent an email to let us know about tonight's episode of "Sensing Murder" on the Discovery Times tonight. The episode is entitled "Parkway Mystery."

Here is the description from the Discovery Times website:

College freshman Cassandra Hailey and Keith Call left for their first date on April 9, 1988 and were never seen again. Now, police investigators have agreed to bring in psychics Pam Coronado and Laurie Campbell to breathe new life into this cold case.

Sensing Murder features psychics and private investigators looking into unsolved murder cases. According to her website, Pam Coronado claims to use clairvoyance and psychometry to gain "insight" into a crime or missing person case. By holding objects worn or loved by the victim, Pam claims she can "tune in" to the person and learn of their current physical state and clues about their location.
Laurie Campbell claims to communicate with lost loved ones.

As far as psychics go, my own personal view and opinion of those who claim to communicate with the dead and see beyond normal human perception will be presented in detail in the future. I can summarize my thoughts by saying this: If anything supernatural is occurring or if the person is merely a good guesser, should these people be able to accurately solve or assist in solving cases their value should not be discounted. I know there are many charlatans preying upon those in grief and in mourning. Then again, this is true in many other businesses, as well. I do know that I want to believe, and I know many of you feel the same way. I am also glad when these cases receive attention, even if it sometimes takes the sensational to stir up public interest.

This episode of Sensing Murder deals with the Colonial Parkway Killer, a predator that stalked the Virginia scenic route between 1986 and 1989.

Michael Nicholaou Remains a Person of Interest

Fox 25 News in Boston is running a story on Michael Nicholaou tonight at 1O:30 P.M. Eastern. The story will be available online at MyFoxBoston.com. Four weeks after Nicholaou had broken his wife's shoulder, she left him stay with her sister. Nicholaou followed her. Michael Andrew Nicholaou killed his wife and step-daughter on New Year's Eve in 2005. He then fatally shot himself after being surrounded by police. He only four weeks prior.

Nicholaou remains under the scrutiny of law enforcement for many unsolved murders in New England. If not for the efforts of one diligent private investigator, Nicholaou's crimes may have gone unnoticed. Lynn-Marie Carty, CEO of ReunitePeople.com has spent years examining Nicholaou's life and crimes. She wants to be sure that he answers for his crimes. She believes that his victim's deserve to know the answers that Nicholaou tried to keep hidden in his life, and in his death.

Lynn-Marie Carty, a female private investigator, started on Nicholaou's trail when she was hired by a Vermont mother in 2001 to help find her daughter, Michelle Ashley. In August of 1988, a pregnant Jane Boroski was attacked outside a market. At the time of Boroski's attack, police were investigating the deaths of six women. Their bodies had been dumped in wooded areas of Vermont and New Hampshire. The unknown suspect was being referred to as the Connecticut River Valley killer.

After meeting with Lynn-Marie Carty and viewing the evidence and photos gathered by her, Boroski believes she has finally found the man responsible for trying to kill her in 1988. Jane Boroski is certain that Michael Andrew Nicholaou was the man responsible for her attack.

There is much more to this story. Lynn-Marie Carty, who knows Nicholoau's life like the back of her hand, believes that Nicholaou may have been a prolific serial killer, responsible for many homicides an missing persons cases across New England.

Missing Terra Haute Woman

I have usually limited my blogs to posts concerning the cases on this site. I have decided to stray from this policy somewhat for a few different reasons. For one, I see a lot of stories that I believe need immediate attention in order not to become one of the cold cases presented on CrimeShadows.com or some other website. The current case I would like to present here is that of Nikole Steelman.

Nikole Steelman (I have also seen this name spelled Nikolle) went missing on March 5 of 2007, according to WEIU, a Charleston, IL television station. Steelman was dropped off in the Gander Mountain parking lot while on her way to a doctor’s appointment. Steelman didn’t show up for the appointment. She was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and jeans and had dyed her naturally brown hair to red. She has green eyes. She is 5' 7" and weighs 210 pounds.
A related story
Tribstar.com states that Steelman has 13 tattoos, including a tattoo on her chest of red cherries with green leaves. The story also said that Steelman's three-year old daughter was killed in a car accident on August 13, 2004. Strange events related to the death of Katana Steelman, the daughter, also made their way into the press. Could these events be related?

According to Courier Journal.com, a man had stolen over $1700 dollars worth of donations intended for the girl's burial. The alleged thief, 26 year-old Jeff Duncan of Ypsilanti, MI, left with the money and all of his clothes in his blue 2003 Ford pick-up (14wfie.com). Duncan, hard on his luck, had been staying with the family more than three weeks.

Steelman's family fears for Ms. Steelman's safety, however,(according to reports) police do not suspect foul play in this case. In fact, it is believed the woman's disappearance may be entirely voluntary. After seeing this story, I certainly hope that is the case. It is a frightening world out there.

Cipher Solving Center

We've added a Cipher Solving Center for those interested in solving the 340 cipher of the Zodiac case. The cipher was sent November 8, 1969 by the zodiac killer, a serial killer that targeted the San Francisco bay area in the late sixties and early seventies. The cipher remains unsolved and the killer has never been caught.

We will be adding more resources for solving the cipher in the future. CrimeShadows.com will offer books on cryptography, some of which may have even been read by the Zodiac. We will provide links to relevant websites and online texts, as well as programs that can be used in solving the cipher.

Zodiac 340 Cipher
Brax Sisco, a long-time programmer responsible for solving the Ray N cipher at Zodiackiller.com, has written some Open Source programs for solving the 340 cipher. CrimeShadows.com is hosting the applications. The programs are free to use and can be downloaded in compressed format.

We hope these tools will prove useful in solving the 340 cipher. I have long been under the impression that the 340 cipher is unsolvable. My theory has been that it is somewhat of an oracle where one can see what he wants to see, especially if that person is at all familiar with the Zodiac case. I would like very much to be proved wrong, if indeed the cipher can be solved and is not just a long-term practical joke by the Zodiac. Authorities Looking Into Nicholaou

Last month I told you about a suspect in the Colonial Parkway case. Private Investigator Lynn-Marie Carty, the CEO and Founder of ReunitePeople.com, contacted CrimeShadows.com about a man whose past she has been investigating for quite some time. I had a chance to get to know Ms. Carty a little bit since, and I can tell you this: She is one "squeaky wheel." She is someone that is getting things done regarding this man with a dark past. She follows every lead and keeps on the heels of law enforcement. I am glad to say the diligence of this female private investigator has been paying off as of late.

Authorities in Lovingston, Virginia are investigating the case for rape against Michael Andrew Nicholaou, a man who killed his wife and stepdaughter before committing suicide in 2006. The 1984 rape occurred along the Blue Ridge Parkway. An innocent man, who bore a striking resemblance to Nicholaou, was convicted and sent to prison. After spending a decade behind the bars of a tough prison, he was exonerated by DNA evidence. Authorities are looking at Nicholaou very carefully. If Nicholaou is indeed the man, we can bet it is going to take more than a resemblance to convict. There are other peculiarities that tie Nicholaou to the crime.

A Letter to a Killer

Brenda and I just got through speaking with Rose Bagley's Daughter, Heather Walker. From listening to her speak, I can tell you she is an intelligent, level-headed young woman. She wants very much to see justice done in this case, as do we. We cannot let her mother slip through the cracks of time. Please, read the story of Rose's tragic death. A murder was committed, and someone must answer. I believe someone will, someday. If I didn't believe that, I would not type another word, or write another Web page. Justice has to happen.

This is a letter we received from Heather. The letter is for the person(s) responsible for her mother's death.

Letter To A Killer

To those who were involved in the murder of Rose Bagley,

If you murdered Rose maliciously out of revenge, then I want you to know that there is nothing in this world my mother could have done to deserve what you have done to her.

If you murdered her for her medication and money, then you should know that my mother would have given you anything that you wanted. All you had to do is ask.

If my mother’s death was an accident, then I want you to know that you are a coward and a thief for stealing her from her family and trying to get away with it.

In any of these given situations you had a choice on whether my mother lived or died. Given the decision herself, Rose Bagley would have chosen to live.

Rose was a Sister, a Mother, a Grandmother, and a Friend. She has a family who loves her very much. So who are you to decide that our time with her is over? Who are you to decide that her family needed to suffer?

I can only pray that your conscience will torment you for your actions and that your dreams become nightmares as my mother’s soul haunts you, and you suffer as she has suffered.

And everyday when you wake in the morning, you will ask yourself, "Is this the day that I will finally pay for my crime?"

Because Rose Bagley will find justice.

This Friday at the Box Office: Zodiac

The David Fincher movie Zodiac is finally coming out this Friday, March 2. This motion picture is sure to be a boost to cases of this type. While some in law enforcement will surely be whining about all the false leads, there might be something worth paying attention to. There are some agencies and officers that are dedicated to their jobs and don't just brush aside old cases because they don't like them. Unfortunately the opposite is also true.

The Zodiac is directed by David Fincher, known for his thrillers "Se7en" and "Panic Room". The screenplay was written by James Vanderbilt, who is also a producer of the film. The movie is based on two Robert Graysmith books. Robert Graysmith was a cartoonist at the San Francisco Chronicle who became obsessed with the Zodiac case. The stars of the film are Jake Gyllenhaal, (Jarhead, Brokeback Mountain, Donnie Darko) and Mark Ruffalo (Count on Me). The movie also stars Anthony Edwards of "ER" and "Revenge of the Nerds." Robert Downey Jr., known for his role "Ally McBeal" and the movie "Less than Zero," as well as his off-screen insobreity.

The movie, which is said to be "lightly fictionalized," follows the investigators and reporters who are trying to track down the infamous Zodiac killer. The story takes place, as in reality, in the San Francisco Bay area in the late sixties and early seventies. The killer, whose victims are mostly young couple in lover's lanes, writes cryptic letters to police and newspapers. The letters are tauntingly written boasts of his crimes and dares to capture him. As an earnest follower of the case, I can tell you the story is one that has potential to eat away at you if you let it.

The folks behind this movie are touting its accuracy. It remains to be seen (by most of us anyway) how much is true and how much is just Hollywood fluff. The movie is, after all, based on the controversial Robert Graysmith books. I will say this: Despite all of the inaccuracies in the Graysmith books, there is also a lot of truth, a lot of facts, and a lot of things worth considering. See the movie! This movie is based on the real life serial killer that all of the fictional movies have tried to copy. The chronicles of the Zodiac killer is one of the most frightening true stories of all time. The most frightening aspect of the case is that the Zodiac has never been identified.

An F.A.Q. for the game includes the following questions and answers:

Q: How can I get the jacket off? And also, where do I start cutting it?
A: ...It takes a little getting used to, but think of it the same way you would if you were to do it in real life.

...If the knife edges slip out during the cut, you have to start again. Once you have one side, do the same on the other!

Q: She keeps moving! Make her stop!
A: She has to put up a bit of a fight! If you are still having problems, reduce the skill level.

There are other questions and answers, too, including some I would not print on this blog. To show the mindset of Nicholaou's "recreation", one of the less explicit, but still disturbing images from the game is shown below.

This is certainly the tip of a very large iceberg of the degenerate lifestyle of Nicholaou. Since Internet video is becoming a popular media device in these modern times, I plan to offer a series of videos soon. These videos will highlight the cases on this site, as well as other related cases. I also plan to discuss issues related to amateur researchers like myself and the visitors to this site. Viewers will be encouraged to send questions and comments for future episodes. I plan to offer a combination of both live and prerecorded episodes. I encourage those interested in the Zodiac case to visit. While I personally don't have a suspect that I believe is the Zodiac killer, Rodelli's site is indeed interesting and well presented. With the release of the David Fincher movie, Zodiac, coming out March 2, we've been anticipating an increase in traffic to this site. This will help spark interest in not only the Zodiac case, but other cases on this site.

The new Zodiac movie is based on a true story, though the author and the books on which the film is based remains a center of controversy among researchers of the Zodiac case. I haven't seen the film, yet, so I can't really say how much of it that I see as true and how much is Hollywood.

In a recent interview with Donal Logue, the actor who plays Napa County Sheriff's Department detective Ken Narlow, Logue had this to say: "It’s a weird murder story because there’s, as opposed to Son of Sam or something, you don’t have a really dynamic break in the case that you find out who the killer is. The Zodiac Killer just kind of stopped. They think it’s somebody who passed away, but they’re not sure." I'm not sure who the "they" Logue is referring to is, but many theories exist among law enforcement and amateur researchers alike. Regardless, many, including myself, hope that the film will help bring more evidence to light and perhaps persuade someone who knows something to speak up.

The marketing strategy being used by Paramount Pictures is also stirring up a little controversy. I really don't see what the fuss is about, after all the suspect has never been caught. I don't think people are the scurrying little fraidy-cats some would have us believe. We live in a real world, full of very real fears. Attempting the impossible task of having us live life as sheltered lambs will not do anyone a good service.

America's Most Wanted host John Walsh was sent a series of anonymous, threatening letters in 1991. The letters were by someone claiming to be the San Francisco Zodiac killer. This is not a reference to Heriberto Seda, the New York Zodiac, but a completely different character. The letter is believed to have been sent by a copycat. Does Dennis Know Jack?

Back in January, Dennis Kaufman gave an interview to an Internet radio station. Dennis Kaufman, for those new to the Zodiac case, is the self-proclaimed stepson of the Zodiac Killer. Kaufman, and his theories are the subject of much controversy in the circle of researchers looking into the Zodiac case. He has become a very unpopular person, to say the least. This is due not only to his claims that his stepfather, Jack Tarrance, was the Zodiac Killer, but also to Kaufman's seemingly bellicose personality.

Those of you who are familiar with me, and my own site, know that I have opinions and theories of my own. You also should know that I believe that all sides of an issue should be heard. With the January interview, which lasted in the neighborhood of two hours, we had a chance to hear Dennis Kaufman's reasoning as to why he believed that Jack Tarrance, now deceased, was the Zodiac Killer. I have to say, I was not convinced. I was, in fact, rather annoyed at the the lack of substance and the attacks against anyone who didn't share Kaufman's view.

The fact remains that Dennis Kaufman's theories have received some attention in the national media, and continue to be a source of speculation among the public. It is for this reason that I am even discussing Dennis Kaufman or Jack Tarrance at all.

I have been a frequent poster, albeit for a short while, at Tom Voigt's message board. Tom Voigt is the webmaster of ZodiacKiller.com, which remains the source of the most information and discussion of the San Francisco serial killer. After listening to the interview, which was broadcast over the Internet on January 11, 2007, I made a post under the heading reserved for discussion of Jack Tarrance as suspect. That post is presented below:

Any person who listened to the interview of Dennis Kaufman last night had the privilege of listening to two hours of exaggeration and outright lies. Up until last night, I even gave Dennis the benefit of the doubt. He presented an interesting story on his site. He had two hours to prove his case last night. He failed. He even proved his motivation for his accusation. He has some unresolved issues with his stepfather, who was very likely the kind of person Dennis described. However, no matter how nasty this man may have been, Dennis and his crony presented nothing worthy of foundation. He also claimed that his site was the only site that held no bias, the only site containing truth. I know he was referring to this site, but he has also visited mine. I am a member of this board and have become a frequent poster. I do not agree with Tom and Ed on everything and I express as much. Everyone seems to have their say here, as long as they don't make terrorist threats, which Dennis readily admits to. Sure, everyone has opinions, including the webmasters here. But instead of bias, I see that Tom has provided an excellent medium for free discussion. Dennis Kaufman has lost all credibility with me. There is nothing he can say about Jack Tarrance that can't be said about a multitude of other men. All of his so-called "facts" seem to be conveniently out of view. I heard the two of them blatantly lying with my own two ears. He has his own devil he wants to vilify further, at the expense of the truth.

It became apparent that Dennis Kaufman was a lurker at the message board, as well. I recieved an email from Dennis asking if I suffered from hearing loss and also attacking Tom Voigt's credibility. It seemed that Dennis was upset because I said that he admitted to terrorist threats. I responded by saying that I would listen to the broadcast again, and if I had made any mistake I would admit to it publicly. It seems I had made a mistake, so I will make a public correction: Dennis Kaufman did not admit to making terroristic threats, he stated that he was arrested for making them. I will certainly listen to the broadcast again and make any necessary corrections. I do not wish to misrepresent the facts. I stand by my claim that you said many things that were not true. I have tried to maintain a level of integrity and objectivity on my website. You have insulted my site, and others, with no cause. I sent an email with questions to the show. These questions were not asked. The answers may change my mind about your credibility. You may not be interested in my opinion, but I think that you are.

If you have compelling facts to prove your case, you should present them in an organized manner. You have not done this to my satisfaction. As for your included link, I really don't see the relevance. I do not make my conclusions based on Tom Voigt's views or opinion. We have very different ideas about the kind of person the Zodiac killer is/was. I did say that I believe that despite his different views, I believe he provides equal time for opposing viewpoints. Of course, in a forum of free expression, comments may become heated (look at any courtroom or session of Congress). In contrast, your website is far from being objective. Your comments regarding my colleagues are based on your own resentment of past events. The people you claim have been ruled out, have not been eliminated as suspects to the satisfaction of many investigators and researchers. The only time we hear of Jack Tarrance being a suspect is when you are the one making the claim.

When you left one of your posts on my message board, I had already heard many negative things about you. At that time, I felt that the riff between you and others may have been obscuring your message, which I found interesting. I said "like to make my own assessments. I will look further into your claims and currently welcome any input you may have." I have looked at all the available information and have found nothing that raises my suspicions to the level of labeling your stepfather a "major suspect." I am not too proud to admit when I am wrong. I encourage you to prove me wrong. You don't know me, but I assure you I strive to be a fair man. If I have made a mistake, I will admit to it publicly.

As for now, your broadcast comments have left me with serious doubts about your credibility. I had wanted to present your side of the story on my website at some point. If your side of the story is limited to the comments and vagueness of the radio interview, I no longer feel the need. Below, I have posted the questions I would have liked to hear answers to the other night.

Did you ever ask Jack directly if he was the Zodiac? If so, what was his response?

Did you follow up on the taped interview that you planned for your stepfather's stories? If so, where can one listen to the audio or read a transcript?

Can you definitely place Jack Tarrance at any of the murder locales? Receipts, cancelled checks, other dated documents indicating a location would be good.

These are certainly not all of my questions, but your response would be a good start.

Dennis responded with another hate inspired email which included exaggerated claims. He said nothing regarding my questions, although he did say he didn't intend to insult my site. He apologized for my questions not being answered, but didn't seize the opportunity to answer them. I responded by writing "You did insult my site, and every other site covering the Zodiac, except your own. I like facts, plain and simple. They speak much louder than speculations and assumptions. If you continue on your spiteful path, you will only reach more isolation and discredit. You are your own worst enemy."

At this point, my displeasure with Dennis Kaufman had grown considerably, even since his Internet interview. I had reached the conclusion that Dennis Kaufman was an angry man. It seemed that anger that was behind his claims. I felt, and still feel, that resentment and anger for his stepfather has more to do with Kaufman's claims than any so called evidence. I am no psychologist, but I think it is rather obvious that Dennis Kaufman has some serious unresolved issues regarding that relationship.

About a week later, I responded to a post from another member regarding the similarity between Jack Tarrance's car and a vehicle seen at Lake Berryessa. I also expressed my frustration with Kaufman regarding some straight answers. That post appears below:

The Chevrolet Impala was the best-selling automobile in the United States. Its peak sales volume in 1965 (over one million sold) is a record. When I was a kid, we had an ice blue '63 Impala, just like the one in DK's photo, only in much better condition. I came across the car a few years ago; It is now somebody's low rider. Compare blue Impalas to Chevy pick-up trucks today; Same model, same color, so what? The only person to actually see Zodiac at Lake Berryessa didn't see him in a car.

I read Kaufman's website without bias. It was interesting. I figured Dennis' strange behavior (detailed on this site) might have been due to the fact that he was possibly raised by a serial killer. I felt there might have been something to his story. I then had an opportunity to listen to his interview. He had 2 hours to make his case. Instead, he distorted the truth and insulted the intelligence of anyone listening.

Like Graysmith, but with even less subtlety, Kaufman has a way of maneuvering the actual facts to create what amounts to fiction. If a person had convincing evidence would this be necessary?

I had some simple questions for Kaufman when he had the recent radio interview. He told me he had no control over the questions asked and apologized for them not being answered. The apology came after I had already sent him the questions again for a second opportunity for him to answer. He still has not answered. My questions weren't that tough, I think he's even hinted at the answers on his site and in the interview. A direct response would help separate the chaff.

For those interested, here are my questions:

1. Did you ever ask Jack directly if he was the Zodiac? If so, what was
his response?

2. Did you follow up on the taped interview that you planned for your stepfather's stories? If so, where can one listen to the audio or read
a transcript?

3. Can you definitely place Jack Tarrance at any of the murder locales? Receipts, canceled checks, other dated documents indicating a location

These are some simple questions in hope of direct answers. There are a lot more, but I figured these would be a start. Dennis Kaufman dances around these issues, but never really says anything with foundation.

I know for a fact that Dennis monitors these discussions and has my email address. Perhaps he'll answer with something besides anger and spite. I doubt it.

Today I finally received a response from Kaufman. He provided his answers to my questions, and refrained from the attacks of his previous correspondence. The email is as follows:

Jack lived less than a mile from Donna Lass at the time of her disappearence. Jack's daughter, Lana, worked at the same casino as Donna at the time she disappeared....

There was some items found in Jack's storage shed in 2001, that may have belonged to some of the victims. Some of the items were earings, and a silver ring with a large oval turquoise.......

Jack never keep any newspaper clippings that I know of........

I will commend Kaufman for not resorting to his usual spiteful tone, particularly since it probably took some effort on his part. I still cannot say that I am any more convinced of his claims than I was before. If Kaufman writes a book will I buy it? It would have to contain more than innuendo and suspicion. If Dennis Kaufman is ever going to be convincing in his claim that Jack Tarrance is the Zodiac, his book will have to have a hell of a lot more than what he has provided to date.

Exorcist Letter Symbols - Another Theory

The January 29, 1974 sent to the Los Angeles Times, commonly referred to as the Exorcist letter, contained a strange doodle at the bottom. The meaning of the doodle has been debated for years, yet no one has found agreement on its actual intimation. One theory suggests it is based on a Chinese symbol borrowed from a soy container that once belonged to a suspected Zodiac victim. Another claims it to be the call letters of a local television station. Some think the symbols may be the killer's initials. There are other theories, as well.

I am about to introduce another theory. Suppose those of us looking at the doodle haven't been seeing the "forest for the trees." I believe, along with others, that the Zodiac may have been influenced by the San Francisco underground. Though the word underground alludes to the hidden and/or esoteric, the San Francisco underground was very public and vocal in the days of the Zodiac killer.

There were underground comics drawn by the like of Spain Rodriguez and Robert Crumb. There were underground magazines and various underground artists of all sorts. there was the psychedelic underground. There were the poster artists and various other so-called nonconformists. There was the Haight Theater which became the Straight Theater.

The Straight Theater was a place many of the rock bands of the day came to perform. There seemed to be a lot of imagery and references that may seem familiar to anyone who has looked at the Zodiac case. Bobby Beausoleil's band, The Magick Powerhouse of OZ played there. The posters for their performances contained a symbol depicting the letter Z inside of a circle (the letter o). Kenneth Anger presented his assemblage of performers in a show billed as the "Equinox of the Gods." The handbills for these shows contained many occult references; after all the show was named for an Aleister Crowley work. One of the handbills for the Anger show depicted Osiris with his crook and flail, an image I have found to be similar to the so-called wide flange beam symbol of the Zodiac killer.

Straight theater artists created many posters for the performing bands. Many of these posters contained astrological imagery. One of the artists even called himself Zodiac. The occult and astrology were very prominent in the San Francisco underground. But what, if anything does the Straight Theater and/or the San Francisco underground have to do with the symbols found at the bottom of the Exorcist letter?

If you look at some of the music posters from the time, you will find that the artists had certain creative methods for displaying text. Sometimes, instead of the normal fonts, we see blocks containing small patches of ink which depict the spaces between and inside of the letters of the alphabet.

Look at the posters below, and then look at the enlarged detail of one of the posters.

See the letters? Note how they are basically square blocks with squiggles or doodles added to form alphanumeric characters. Now consider this:

What if the doodle at the bottom of the Exorcist letter is really such a doodle without the defining block or outline of the actual letters?

For example, look at the figure below.

Note how the upper part of the doodle resembles alphanumeric characters (6,G or E) once an outline is added. See how the two slanted strokes at the end of the doodle seem to form another letter (W) once it has been outlined. I don't know what characters, if any, the author was trying to portray with this drawing. I thought this might be another angle to consider. Without any know reference point, a conclusion on which characters should be formed is rather difficult.

If anyone has any ideas, or thinks they may have solved this riddle, let me know. Post here, or send me an email. I hope this post has been of some value to someone investigating the Zodiac, even though it is mainly my thinking out loud.

The Zodiac Forgery Debaucle

April 24, 1978: A letter to the San Francisco Chronicle was mailed from either Santa Clara or San Mateo County.

The letter read as follows:

Dear Editor
This is the Zodiac speaking I am back with you. Tell herb caen I am here, I have always been here. That city pig toschi is good but I am bu smarter and better he will get tired then leave me alone. I am waiting for a good movie about me. Who will play me. I am now in control of all things.

Back in 1976, columnist Armistead Maupin had written a serial for the Chronicle about a detective mentored by San Francisco inspector Dave Toschi. While writing the series, Maupin received three notecards from apparent citizens praising Toschi. Maupin couldn't match the names to any list of citizens so he suspects Toschi of sending the cards. Maupin doesn't mention the suspected notes until April 1978. When the above letter arrived at th Chronicle. Maupin felt that Toschi was now faking a Zodiac letter. Armistead Maupin and his (Tales of the City) book publicist approached Sergeant Jack O'Shea, head of the SFPD Intelligence Unit, with their claims. O'Shea and Lieutenant Jack Jordan, head of Homicide, decided that Toschi had written the fan letters. Chief Gain claims that he was not told of Toschi's fraudulent letters until late June 1978.

Upon hearing of these suspicions, Toschi immediately called John Shimoda of the USPS crime lab to authenticate the letter. Shimoda confirmed that the letter was the work of the Zodiac. Toschi took the letter to a fingerprint expert at the SFPD crime lab, but nothing of any use was found.

July 10, 1978 San Francisco Police Chief Gain held a press conference announcing the above letter might have been forged. He also announced that Dave Toschi was to be transferred to the pawn shop detail because he had written fake letters to Maupin.

To many, this move seemed rather convenient for Gain, who could now put the ever popular Toschi down a notch in any future political pursuits. No one ever publicly accused Toschi, but the events implied a certain guilt on his part.

So, who pointed the finger at Toschi?
Keith Woodward, former chief of the LAPD's document department.
Robert Prouty, whom Toschi avoided in favor of Shimoda back in April.
Prouty's colleague Terry Pascoe.
John Shimoda, who withdrew his initial finding.

Sherwood Morrill could not be swayed. He could not be convinced Toschi wrote the letters.

The January 29, 1974 Exorcist letter was deemed to be genuine.

Another letter arrived at the Chronicle on July 19, 1978, ten days after Gains' press conference that pointed an invisible finger at Toschi. If Toschi was a forger of Zodiac letters, was he brazen enough to continue sending them even after he was transferred?

With all of the politics going on in the investigation of the Zodiac and among the upper echelon of the force, can we be sure that letters were forged by Toschi? Was the much vilified Robert Graysmith any part of this? Has either Toschi or Graysmith been defamed?

I encourage everyone to take in the facts surrounding this case. Look at what is presented with an open, studious mind. Weed out the rumors, search for the truth. If you are researching this case, base your theories on factual information, not on the popular consensus. If you watch movies, read books, or visit websites about the Zodiac, be aware that all that glitters is not gold. There are lots of political tug-of wars, a multitude of agendas, and plenty of unrestrained bias. Just like Joe Friday, we should base our conclusions on "just the facts."

I Am In Control Of All Things

In Robert Graysmith's book, Zodiac Unmasked, Graysmith mentions the following letter:

Date: July 19, 1978
Mailed From: Los Angeles, CA
Sent To: San Francisco Chronicle

Typewritten letter:

I am the ZODIAC and I am in control of all things. I am going to tell you a secret. I like friction tape. I like to have it around in case I need to truss someone up in a hurry....I have my real name on a small metallic tape. You see, while you have it in your possession, I want you to know it belongs to me and you think I may have left it accidentally. I am athletic. It could be swim fins, or a piece of scuba gear. But maybe you play chess with me. I have several cheap sets in closets all over. I have my name on the bottom of the lid with the scotch tape....My tape is waiting for me all over California. Do you know me? I am the ZODIAC and I am in control.

Is this genuine Zodiac correspondence? What is the author trying to say, besides his boast that he is "in control."

Were any murders committed in California where someone was bound with friction tape? What about the metallic tape? Is this an I.D. tape? A measuring tape?

Swim fins. Scuba gear. Arthur Leigh Allen used these items. But, was he the Zodiac, as Graysmith suggests? Was it Allen just trying to get his kicks claiming to be the killer?

"But maybe you play chess with me." Was the Zodiac named Knight, King, or Bishop? Castle or Rook?

Friction tape. Metal tape. Scotch tape. The author is trying to say something with these references. What is he trying to say?

More Information on the Colonial Parkway Murders

I haven't posted anything on the blog lately, but please know, I have been working "behind the scenes." I will be adding a lot more information to the site concerning the Colonial Parkway killer. New additions will include collective information that you will not find on any other website. I will also be adding profiles of the killer and intriguing connections between the Parkway killer and other area murders. You may have noticed that I have added more details to the individual incident pages. These pages will change as I receive more information. I am also working to provide more information on the Rose Marie Bagley case.

December 1966 Riverside Poem

The dark poetry below was found on the underside of a desk in the campus library Cheri Jo Bates frequented. Many think this note may be another taunt from the Zodiac. Like the similar linking of the Patricia Hautz letter with the Zodiac, CrimeShadows.com disagrees with this assessment. Read the following for more information:

It sounds like a suicide note. "Sick of living" sounds very much like the words of someone suffering from depression. "Unwilling to die" may express the desperation of someone who is crying out for help. The initials indicate that the writer wanted to clue the reader in to his/her identity, perhaps hoping someone would recognise her. The writer, if suicidal, was more than likely a female speaking of herself in third person ("all over her new dress"). The writing was found on the underside of the desk (or the backside of a desktop), The desk may have even been in a storage position. The writer was most likely alone, contemplating a suicide attempt at the time of its writing. The only reason the poem received the attention it did was because it was discovered around the time of Cheri Jo Bates murder. Cheri Jo Bates died. Nobody found her. She did not have a "next time." She was not wearing a red dress. She was not cut with the "clean" blade of a razor. She was brutally stabbed with a small knife.

The Zodiac, was not secretive in his taunts and warnings, only about his identity. He sent his writings directly to his audience. Why would the Zodiac say "she won't die. this time someone'll find her". The Zodiac was a confident killer. It seems that the writer intended to attempt suicide and be discovered bleeding to death. It seems she hoped that the discovery of the note would get her the attention she was desperately seeking.

While I am sure there will be disagreement on these conclusions, I feel certain they are close to the mark.

More Zodiac Parallels as Las Cruces Threats Persist

In my post of September 22, 2006 I wrote about some apparent parallels between the Las Cruces extortion letters and the Zodiac Killer. Now there is another letter and, it seem, even more resemblances of the Zodiac's cowardly threats. The Las Cruces extortionist seems ever the more inspired by the Zodiac killer of the 1960s and 70s.

To follow up on the threats made in August (with deadlines of September 1 and September 22), the Las Cruces letter writer is playing poker with the police again. A letter received October 30 by the Las Cruces Sun News states:

"If you blow your chance Nov. 3 to deliver, more bodies will fall. Now they will fall in schoolyards. Don't believe us? Try us again."

Notice the similarities to October 13, 1969 letter sent to the San Francisco Chronicle by the Zodiac killer:

"School children make nice targets, I think I shall wipe out a school bus some morning. Just shoot out the front tire + then pick off the kiddies as they come bouncing out."

The police believe the Las Cruces letter is written by the same person who wrote earlier this year because he writes his letters in the same odd fashion, using an unusual style of block lettering.

The Zodiac case has never been solved, but law enforcement recently said "case closed" regardless of this disturbing fact.

Rose Marie Bagley

Hampton Roads Daily Press Dittos Last Post

The Hampton Roads Daily Press ran a story Monday on the Colonial Parkway murders. Of course, there is nothing new here; just that the cases remain unsolved after twenty years. The FBI's Norfolk office spokesman, Phil Mann, said the Colonial Parkway murder cases remain open. "We will pursue any lead that comes our way," Mann said. All of the law enforcement agents interviewed in the story declined to discuss the cases.

Colonial Parkway Murders Remain Unsolved

Between 1986 and 1989, at least eight people were murdered along a Virginia scenic route known as the Colonial Parkway. Two people are missing or presumed dead. The person responsible for these murders has never been caught. Authorities have speculated that the unidentified subject responsible for these killings may have been (or remains) in law enforcement, or is perhaps a rogue C.I.A. operative from "the Farm" at Camp Peary in York County.

The first two victims were Rebecca Ann Dowski, 21 and Cathleen Thomas, 27. Their bodies were discovered On October 12, 1986, inside their car. The vehicle had been pushed down an embankment. An autopsy found rope burns on their necks and wrists, signs of strangulation, and their throats had been slashed. Their purses and money were found inside the car. Both women were found fully clothed and there was no evidence of sexual assault.

In September of 1987 the bodies of David Lee Knobling, 20, and Robin Edwards, 14, were discovered in the Ragged Island Wildlife Refuge. They had been murdered. The area they were found was on the south shore of the James River in Isle of Wight County, near Smithfield, Virginia. Knobling's truck was parked at the Refuge several days prior to discovery of the bodies.

On April 9, 1988, Cassandra Lee Hailey and Richard Keith Call were reported missing after going on a first date together. Call's 1982 red Toyota Celica was found, abandoned on the Colonial Parkway in Yorktown, Virginia the following day. Neither body has ever been found, but both are presumed to be dead. Cassandra Lee Hailey was born May 16, 1969. She was 18 years old at the time of her disappearance. She was described as 5'7, weighing 135 pounds. She was caucasian with brown curly hair and brown eyes. Her left ear has three peircings, her right ear is pierced twice. Hailey was last seen wearing stone-washed jeans; and a white blouse worn over a rust-colored jersey turtleneck with long sleeves. She was also wearing a 1987 Tabb High School class ring. Nicknames include Sandra, Sandy, Missy, Cassie

In October, 1989, the bodies of Annamaria Phelps, 18, and Daniel Lauer, 21, were found in New Kent County by a hunter in the woods near a rest area on Interstate 64 between Williamsburg and Richmond. They had been missing since the previous month.

Some feel that the perpetrator was using lights and/or sirens to fool drivers into thinking he was driving unmarked police car. Others believe the killer to be an actual law enforcement officer. While some believe the proximity of the crimes to the C.I.A. training facility is a factor, the F.B.I facility up north could also be a source of a rogue agent.

This killer must be brought to justice. This cannot happen if this case is forgotten. This site will shed light on the crimes committed and present as much as we possibly can about what is known. Hopefully someone, somewhere will have the courage to speak up about what they know. Someone has to know something, has to have seen something that will lead to a resolution in this case.

Psycho(s) Inspired by Zodiac Killer?

It seems the extortionist targeting the city of Las Cruces, New Mexico may have been inspired by the Zodiac Killer of California. The person responsible has sent threatening letters to authorities and the press. This letter is handwritten. There is at least one mispelling, however, whether it is intentional or not questionable. As in the Zodiac case, copies were sent to both police and the news agencies. The Zodiac also threatened to kill people at random throughout the city.

The city has received two letters. the deadline is today, Friday September 22, 2006. Today is the beginning of annual Whole Enchilada Festival. The event normally attracts thousands of patrons. Mayor Bill Mattiace belives the letters are a hoax.

So far, that seems to be the case. Let's hope and pray that remains the case.

Zodiac Killer - See Him Inhale

The text above was written by the infamous Zodiac killer, in a Nov. 9, 1969 letter to the San Francisco Chronicle. Where did Zodiac get this idea of fingerprint obfuscation? Did he discover its unique epidermal adhesive properties while completing a scale model of his favorite automobile? Perhaps the Zodiac enjoyed building model airplanes on weekends where finding young couples to attack wasn't very promising. You see, when he opens that tube, the glue comes rushing out. It gets on your fingers, if not at first, when you try to put the lid back on. Very messy stuff. Maybe he squeezed some out onto a rag or into a paper bag. Those fumes may have been pretty inviting, especially for someone who needed to escape his own dreadful existence.

Sniffing glue was a popular pastime in the 1960's. Airplane glue was easy to obtain and it didn't have the inhalant preventative irritants that are mixed in with today's adhesives. The February 16 issue of Time magazine contained an article explaining the phenomenon:


The newest kick is glue sniffing. A 14-year-old sniffer
explains: "You take a tube of plastic glue, the kind 
squares use to make model airplanes, and you squeeze it
all out in a handkerchief, see. Then you roll up the 
handkerchief into a sort of tube, put the end in your mouth
and breathe through it. It's simple and it's cheap.
It's quick, too. Man!"

Robert Graysmith wrote in his best-selling book titled Zodiac that "When writing letters Zodiac was either smoking marijuana, drinking, or taking some kind of narcotics." The author believed that the killer had been under the influence of some substance when he wrote his taunting missives to the police and press.

Also mentioned in Graysmith's book was the view of Joseph DeLouise, a famous Chicago psychic known for the detalied accuracy of his predictions. DeLouise felt that the Zodiac took "speed and goofballs" before his attacks. Like Graysmith, the psychic also felt that the killer acted under an altered state.

This glue sniffing notion is sure to break the hearts of those who think the Zodiac was way too intelligent to blow his mind on model glue. Before you come unglued, this is only a suggestion. In an unsolved case, I find it unwise to ignore this possibility. None of us can say with all certainty that we know who the Zodiac is. The idea that Zodiac was a glue sniffer shouldn't be ruled out just because someone has a certain picture in their mind that they just can't shake.

While the Zodiac was certainly elusive, I cannot fully credit someone with intelligence who pretty much wallowed in forensic evidence at the sites of his crimes. He may have only sniffed the stuff while writing the letters. He may not have sniffed before he performed the actual attacks. He does admit to having the gunk on his fingers. I cannot rule out the strong possibilty that he sniffed cement. To say that he was too smart and methodical to abstain just doesn't stick.

Of course, in the sixties, this kind of behaviour was not unusual. The August 13, 1962 issue of Newsweek Magazine told it like it was:


You're in outer space. You're Superman.
You're floating in air, seeing double, riding next to God.
It's Kicksville. Are these the fantasies of narcotics 
addicts on a pop? No. More disturbingly, these hopped-up
reactions are those of teenagers hooked on goofballs,
model airplane glue, and cough medicine.
Across the nation, police last week reported case after
case of this alarming trend.

The effects of sniffing glue include slurred speech, agitation, violent behavior, aggression, irritability, tremors, and a staggered gait. Bryan Hartnell stated in an interview: "I think he got rattled...very, very, nervous...his hands were shaking." This was referring to the Zodiac just prior to his stabbing him and his date.

As far as long term damage, inhaling airplane cement can be fatal, causing kidney and liver damage, as well as heart failure. Toluene, the intoxicating substance in the cement causes a syndrome of distal renal tubular acidosis, with a resultant elevated anion gap. This can cause a rapid respiratory rate and an inability to hold one's breath. Toluene is also ototoxic and can cause hearing loss.

Murderer Joseph Kallinger was an inhaler of the fumes of a leather treatment that contained Toluene. He tried to use this as an insanity defense to his crimes. Spree killer Russell Obremski was also a glue sniffer. Other serial killer/cement sniffers of note include Dean Corll, Richard Ramirez (The Night Stalker), Angel Maturino Resendiz (The Railway Killer), and John Martin Crawford.

The Aug. 25, 1967 issue of Time Magazine cites a case where a judge allowed a defense of temporary insanity due to inhalant use by the defendant. Could it be possible that the Zodiac, if indeed he was a sniffer, saw his misuse of airplane glue as a possible defense had he been captured?

During the time of the Zodiac attacks the problem was so inherently obvious and problematic that legislation began addressing the issue. Manufacturers rushed to voluntarily deter misuse before the law could smack them down. Some glue makers began adding mustard oil to their formulations to deter the mind numbing practice.

Some of the less ethical cement manufacturers continued to stick to their old formula. They did not want to lose the profits that customers from around the world gave to their company. Never mind the fact that they were snorting the fumes up their nose instead of building models.

Zodiac Killer Handwriting Analysis

I thought it would be interesting to run the Zodiac's handwriting through some of the online analysis sites. Because the killer is yet unidentified, a look at his handwriting might provide some insight to the unkown person. I think graphology is an intriguing science; some may disagree.

Please remember that the results rely on my input from what I see with my own eyes. This can make the outcome rather subjective. Please, feel free to submit your own analysis, either from a graphology site, or your own knowledge of the subject.

The following analysis is of the Paul Stine letter.

Here is the first set of results that I obtained:

By analyzing how Zodiac crosses his 't's, one can determine if Zodiac has problems controlling his temper. his t-bars join with their stems quite even and accurately. This indicates that Zodiac does not have a bad temper.

How Zodiac dots his 'i's indicates his attentiveness to details. Sometimes Zodiac dots his 'i's directly over the stem and sometimes Zodiac doesn't. This is average. Zodiac is good with some details and careless with others.

Determination is his ability to keep moving continuously toward a goal. Analyzing his 'g's and 'y's will show if his determination is strong or weak. The 'incomplete' nature of the stems on his 'g's and 'y's seems to indicate that Zodiac does not have a lot of staying-power and may quit tasks after a short period of time.

Intuition is the ability to understanding things without reasoning. How intuitive is Zodiac? To answer this we must examine the letter-spacing of his words. The frequent breaks in-between his letters indicates that Zodiac is gifted with insight that enables Zodiac to understand and interpret without effort. Zodiac senses when Zodiac is on the right track and when Zodiac is not. Zodiac has hunches and may be quick to sense sincerity or insincerity in others.

Is Zodiac open to new ideas? Looking at the width of his letter 'e's will help us find out! His 'e's are very tight and closed. This shows that Zodiac has his own opinion about things and will stick to his own ideas. It isn't easy for Zodiac to be tolerant because Zodiac will have a hard time considering ideas and practices that differ from his own.

Does Zodiac need to be noticed? Looking for the ending stroke of a word to curve up and to the left is a good indication of this! his words appear to end without this curving stroke. Zodiac doesn't need to have others approve of what Zodiac does.

How's his sense of humour? By looking for a soft, wavy line leading into an 'm' or 'n', one can see if Zodiac has a good sense of humour. There is not noticeable embellishment on his lines leading into his 'm's and 'n's, this means his sense of humour does not show openly.

Is Zodiac self-conscious? The second hump of his 'm's are even with the first, Zodiac is not self-conscious, and have nothing to worry about.

The lack of loops on his 't's and 'd's indicate that his feelings aren't going to be hurt easily. In fact, Zodiac is not sensitive to criticism at all. Zodiac can be objective about the opinions of other people and accept or reject these opinions without getting emotional about them.

The analysis of his slant is always more accurate answer if Zodiac used unlined paper. The lack of a slant in his handwriting indicates that Zodiac is rigid. Zodiac could put an imaginary ruler beneath his handwriting. Zodiac is obsessed with structure and has a fear of being proved wrong. Zodiac is imposing stress on himself and others around Zodiac.

In his 't's, the relatively heavy weight of his 't-bar' to the stem indicates that Zodiac has strong willpower. Zodiac can clearly visualize his goals. Zodiac knows what Zodiac wants and Zodiac is able to take definite steps toward realizing them. Zodiac is strongly self-disciplined.

The lack of loops Zodiac has at the bottom of his 'm's and 'n's indicates that Zodiac doesn't worry about things. Zodiac is confident in himself and his decisions.

And another set of results, cuts a little deeper, very interesting:

For a graphologist, the spacing on the page reflects the writer's attitude toward their own world and relationship to things in his or her own space. If the inputted data was correct Zodiac has left lots of white space on the right side of the paper. Zodiac fills up the rest of the page in a normal fashion. If this is true, then Zodiac has an unhealthy relationship to the past and has a fear of moving forward. The right side of the page represents the future and Zodiac seems unwilling to face the fear of getting started living now and planning for the future. Zodiac seems to be clinging to past events and spending lots of time thinking about what happened. It would be best to leave the past behind and move on. Stop crowding that left margin.

Zodiac is having some confusion in his physical life. He is examining the past to give him answers about some of his physical desires. He may be trying to find a balance between his philosophical beliefs and his natural physical desires. Zodiac is sarcastic. This is a defense mechanism designed to protect his ego when he feels hurt. He pokes people harder than he gets poked. These sarcastic remarks can be very funny. They can also be harsh, bitter, and caustic at the same time. Zodiac's true self-image is unreasonably low. Someone once told Zodiac that he wasn't a great and beautiful person, and he believed them. Zodiac also has a fear that he might fail if he takes large risks. Therefore he resists setting his goals too high, risking failure. He doesn't have the internal confidence that frees him to take risks and chance failure. Zodiac is capable of accomplishing much more than he is presently achieving. All this relates to his self-esteem. Zodiac's self-concept is artificially low.

Zodiac will stay in a bad situation much too long... why? Because he is afraid that if he makes a change, it might get worse. It is hard for Zodiac to plan too far into the future. He kind of takes things on a day to day basis. He may tell Zodiac his dreams but he is living in today, with a fear of making a change. No matter how loud he speaks, look at his actions. This is perhaps the biggest single barrier to happiness people not believing in and loving themselves. Zodiac is an example of someone living with a low self-image, because their innate self-confidence was broken.

In reference to Zodiac's mental abilities, he has a very investigating and creating mind. He investigates projects rapidly because he is curious about many things. He gets involved in many projects that seem good at the beginning, but he soon must slow down and look at all the angles. He probably gets too many things going at once. When Zodiac slows down, then he becomes more creative than before. Since it takes time to be creative, he must slow down to do it. He then decides what projects he has time to finish. Thus he finishes at a slower pace than when he started the project. He has the best of two kinds of minds. One is the quick investigating mind. The other is the creative mind. His mind thinks quick and rapidly in the investigative mode. He can learn quicker, investigate more, and think faster.

Zodiac can then switch into his low gear. When he is in the slower mode, he can be creative, remember longer and stack facts in a logical manner. He is more logical this way and can climb mental mountains with a much better grip. Zodiac is not facing something going on in his life today. He is deceiving himself about it. Often, Zodiac's opinion of himself is different than those around him. This trait gives Zodiac the ability to deny anything that does not agree with his "truth." This trait is not always something negative. It is only a defense mechanism allowing Zodiac not to face some reality in his life at this time.

Zodiac is a very emotional person with a broad range of emotions from the highest highs to the lowest lows. He feels emotional situations very strongly. He'll flash to the very peaks of elation, sweeping everything before him. Then, for some reason unknown to himself, he will burn out emotionally. These mood swings can be very disturbing to him. Sometimes, he feels that he can no longer produce anything. But, after given some time alone to "recharge his emotional batteries", he will spring back into action.

Because Zodiac feels situations intensely, he relates easily to others' problems. If he is not careful, when he comes into contact with someone who is in a depressed frame of mind, he will also suffer the same emotions and change moods. Zodiac reacts impulsively, without much thought before hand. He may plan everything in detail before he even begins, then do it completely different when the time comes to carry it through.

Zodiac has a strong need for affection. He thrives on touching and being touched. Zodiac desires being told that he is loved, every day. He enjoys being the center of attention. He loves attention, sometimes he even retells stories that got him attention earlier. Zodiac has the possibility of being a actor or natural born salesperson, simply because he relates so well to other people. He likes expressing how he feels, what he is doing, and what he plans to do.

He is a people person. He will work most efficiently in a people orientated job as opposed to a job working alone on an assembly line (that would drive him insane.) People that write their letters in an average height and average size are moderate in their ability to interact socially. According to the data input, Zodiac doesesn't write too large or too small, indicating a balanced ability to be social and interact with others.

The Strange Case of Eugene Bennett

June 23, 1996: Eugene Bennett, a former agent for the F.B.I. abducted Alva Clever, a Manassas, Virginia pastor, at gunpoint. Bennett then had Clever lure Margo Bennett (Bennett's spouse) to the Prince of Peace United Methodist Church. Bennett, whose face has been concealed by ski mask, binds Clever to a chair until Margo Bennett, a former FBI agent herself, gets there. Bennett had also attached a bag containing explosives around the minister's waist and put a bag over his head.

Margo, noting the intentionally suspicious content of Clever's phone call, arrives and confronts Eugene Bennett. After dousing him with pepper spray, she ducks into an office where she fires a shot at her husband from behind a desk. The shot misses. Bennett, armed with a .45, continues to taunt his wife.

Bennett tells his wife of the explosives tied to Clever, warning her that they could all perish should she choose not to communicate with him. Margo stayed behind the desk. She was able to call authorities from the office, prompting Bennett to leave the scene.

Eugene Bennett was later arrested at his residence after a short standoff with law enforcement. It seemed Bennett had to restrain "Ed" in his garage before he could give himself up. Ed was Bennett's alter-ego, an evil replication that Bennett claimed took over during periods of mental blackout.

After Bennett was apprehended, a pipe bomb was discovered outside the church. Police also found a bomb in a locker kept by Bennett at Northern Virginia Community College. Margo Bennett was employed as a ploice supervisor at the Woodbridge, VA school. Even more explosive components were discovered at the school's Annandale campus.

This incident was not the first act of violence involving Eugene Bennett. In 1993, prior to a fraud trial against Bennett, a similar incident occurred. Bennett attacked his wife with a stun gun, then tied her up. He warned her that her children would be killed if she testified against him. He held her for several days until the trial started.

So what we have is man who has no problem with kidnapping. A person who claims to have blackouts and an evil alter-ego. A person trained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A person who --has a strong hatred for lesbians.

Yes, Bennett blamed his wife's romantic involvement with Patricia Cornwell, a Virginia author, for his marital problems. Bennett claimed that his wife would "secretly meet with Cornwell for romantic candlelight dinners, would visit Cornwell's Richmond home, accepted expensive gifts and clothes from her and spoke with her on the phone constantly." He said the couple would often meet at a gay bar near Quantico. Bennett said that, while laughing at him ``Mrs. Bennett admitted the affair" and "asked Mr. Bennett why it took him so long to figure things out.'' He worried that his children would be "brought up by lesbians". Bennett blamed the affair for leading him into insanity. He claims to have found lingerie and sexual toys in her vehicle. He said his wife called him a "square." Bennett trailed Margo to Richmond and "observed Mrs. Bennett and Ms. Cornwell hugging and kissing in their vehicles'' So he hooks a bomb up to her minister, threatens her with a gun, claiming all the while he was insane and Ed was the guilty one. This was a man who claimed to have lost his sanity because of lesbians. A person who claims to black out and do things that he cannot recall later; a sort of Jekyll & Hyde situation.

A few years prior, a mental health professional met with Bennett at his request. The man later said that Eugene Bennett was "a dangerously volatile character." The prosecution against Bennett stated: "when he went into that church and tied up the reverend this wasn't the first time he had done that kind of thing. When he told the reverend that someone was watching his kids, it wasn't the first time he had gained control over someone through that ruse. He did it to Mrs. Bennett in '93. Bound her. Got the jump on her just like he did the minister. Bound her.

Eugene Bennett is scheduled for release in July of 2017.

In a completely unrelated story, occuring approximatley three weeks prior to the above:

June 1, 1996 Park rangers discover the bodies of 24 year-old Julianne Williams and 26 year-old Lollie Winans in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Their wrists were bound. Their throats had been cut. Many people felt that the two were targeted because of their sexual orientation.

In 2002, Darrell David Rice was charged with the crimes based solely on jail informants. In 2004, the federal government sought to drop the charges against him, based on newly obtained forensic evidence. Hairs found at the scene did not match the two women or Rice.

The Hautz Letter

Was this letter sent by the Zodiac killer? I believe I may have located Patricia Hautz. The following is the text of a letter sent to the Riverside Enterprise in November of 1967. You can view the actual letter at ZodiacKiller.com.

the lives of their own children. " Are we laying the blue print for
another killer?" might be one of the questions brought to mind by
such a story.

I have located a namesake of the letter's author. My research indicates she was living in the Riverside area at the time this letter was authored. As of this writing, the person I have located lives within an hour of Riverside. I can say, with a degree of certainty, that a woman named Patricia Hautz did live in the area at the time this letter was written. Of course, this person no longer goes by her maiden name. It is quite possible that she was the author of the letter. It could also be that someone wrote the letter using her name. With respect to the person's privacy, I can post no more information at this time.

Crowder Point Crime Scene Analysis

I don't really know where to start with this. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information or discussion out there. The following is my take on the situation based on what is known. Please contribute if you know anything else, or to give your own analysis.
The information provided says that the bodies were laying next to each other, head to toe. I am guessing that "next to each other" means that they were lying parallel. Forty feet is not really that far to drag someone. I would bet that the perpetrator was acting alone based on the short distance the two bodies were dragged. If he did have a partner, he or she must not have had the strength of the man. The killer was obviously in a hurry.

The male's back pocket was cut open, most likely to remove his billfold. I think the motive was to hide the couple's identity more than an act of robbery. A robber would probably have taken the rings and watches, as well. He would have at least checked to see if they were genuine if he was after money. The fact that the bodies weren't buried or burnt again suggests the killer was expedient in getting away. I would think that he was not a local, but someone traveling through the area. He may have even picked up the couple in Texas.

The lady's underwear was said to be way too large for the woman. Her pants were not oversized. Could it be that she borrowed the undergarments from a larger sized lady? Maybe the killer was accompanied by a heavy-set woman. Maybe the female victim borrowed the panties from someone at a stop along the way.

The hour difference in time suggests that the victims were traveling to or from Mountain Standard time. I would guessthat they were coming from West Texas or New Mexico,via Dallas, but that is only a guess.

I can't help but discount the possibility that they were using the railroad. I think that it is only coincidence that the railway is adjacent to the road.

I will continue to seek out more information. Again, the goal of any analysis on this site is to promote discussion and awareness of this case.

The First Cases

The first cases we will be looking at are the Crowder Point Couple, The Colonial Parkway Murders, The Zodiac Case, and Joseph Newton Chandler III.

The Crowder Point couple is a couple found murdered north of McAlester, OK in 1996. They have never been identified, and their killer remains unknown.

The Colonial Parkway killer is responsible for several murders in Virginia committed in the 1980s. He is still at large and two victims are still missing. I had been planning to launch this site for some time. An email that I received from the family of a Colonial Parkway victim is what prompted me to get things going.

The Zodiac Killer terrorized the San Francisco and Riverside communities in the 1960s and 1970s. He taunted the police and family members of victims he brutally murdered. He has never been captured.

A man using the stolen identity of Joseph Newton Chandler III died in 2002. To this day his true identity remains a mystery. I have researched this case and have a possible match to his identity.

Welcome to CrimeShadows.com News. This is where I will be psoting news and analysis relating to the website. It is my hope that by generating discussion of certain cases that they will receive the attention they deserve. The perpetrators to these crimes are still out there. They have not been punished for their cowardly crimes. The families of victims deserve to see justice done.

Low-down Legislators. Spotlight on elected officials that elect to help the criminals instead of the victims.
